| no partners | | Today I did 3 different hikes, with each hike going to a wilderness highpoint:
1) Fossil Creek Wilderness HP (elevation of 6,840 feet)
2) West Clear Creek Wilderness HP (elevation of 7,000 feet)
3) Wet Beaver Wilderness HP (elevation of 6,380 feet)
Each of these was a liner where a point on a slope at the wilderness boundary was the highpoint.
Fossil Creek
(1.7 miles with 208 feet of AEG)
I took FR 609 off of Highway 87, drove in for a bit, and then parked. I could have driven further but decided to go ahead and stretch my legs a bit. FR 609 goes into the wilderness and gets within about 100 feet of the highpoint. I left the road and walked up a slope until I got to the wilderness boundary, which was the highpoint.
West Clear Creek
(1.91 miles with 259 feet of AEG)
This was another one that I got to by driving in off of Highway 87 and parking after driving a bit. I walked down the road, and left the road to get to the wilderness boundary. On this one I had to walk downhill to the wildeness boundary, which is at the 7,000 foot contour. Since the boundary follows the contour, there are an infinite number of highpoints. I just went to a spot on the contour and called it good.
Wet Beaver
(4.79 miles with 743 feet of AEG)
On this one I drove in off of Stoneman Lake Road and parked east of Apache Maid Mountain. The road was really rough so I decided to park and walk. The highpoint is in the far eastern part of the wilderness just above Brady Canyon. If you look at a map it looks like a panhandle shape. I had to drop into Brady Canyon from the north, and then come back out of the south side of the canyon. I located two cairns, each at a possible highpoint. One of the cairns had a summit register which I signed.
Synopsis
It was a fun day tagging these 3 highpoints. Afterward, I headed up to Flag to spend the night and hike up there the next day. |
