House Mountain is in a developed park, the House Mountain State Natural Area.
The park has a nice trail system that forms a loop. I did the loop clockwise by ascending on the West Overlook Trail to the Crest Trail; then I hiked the entire length of the Crest Trail; and descended on the Mountain Trail. On the Crest Trail there are 2 summits about 0.8 miles apart; on topo maps both summits are in the 2080 foot closed contour, but lidar data indicates that the summit to the SW is actually 32 feet higher. Even though I only needed to hit the SW summit to claim the highpoint, I went to both summits to enjoy the views at an overlook near the NE summit.
The ascent and descent to and from the Crest Trail were tougher than I thought it would be -- the going was steep with some class 2 rocky sections. It was very humid, but very little sunshine got through the thick canopy of the large deciduous hardwood trees on the mountain.
This was an enjoyable hike, and I only saw a couple of other people once I got up on the Crest Trail. I have spent a good bit of time in Knoxville over the years, and it was nice to make it to the county highpoint. |
