| partners | | This was a hike to the summit of Orange Butte (elevation of 5,240 feet and prominence of 1,040 feet), which is in northern Cochise County between San Simon and Bowie. It is less than a mile south of the Graham County-Cochise County line.
Three of us met in Bowie and caravanned to the TH. The dirt roads that we drove on were wide and well graded, and 4WD was not needed. We parked near the base of the north side of the mountain at a water tank in Tule Wells Draw.
The hike was short, sweet, and steep: it was about a one mile hike each way, gaining 1,400 of elevation on the way up, and losing the elevation on the way back. We basically just went up a ramp in a gully. Even though it was steep, the footing was good, although there was some class 2 scrambling along the way and some talus to deal with.
The summit area was nice and open, and the views were excellent. I enjoyed looking at some snow covered peaks: Mount Graham, Chiricahua Peak, Mount Baldy, and Escudilla. I located the benchmark and both reference marks, all of which were USDA disks. There were a number of entries in the summit register log, partly due to Orange Butte being on the Southern Arizona Hiking Club (SAHC) peak list.
Synopsis
I enjoyed this short hike. The road to the TH was good, it had a nice summit, and the views were excellent! |

Wildflowers Observation Moderate The stars of the day on the wildflower derby were owl clover and scorpion weed, but several others made decent showings. |
