| no partners | | Belated post. This was a travel day in Oregon. Driving along the coast we had several planned stops. The first was the Old Growth Cedar Preserve at the community of Rockaway. My wife had planned this hike, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The trail and parking for this is right off the 101 coastal highway. Parking for this trail is very minimal. There is parking for 8 vehicles. When we arrived the lot was full and we ended up parking along the road with about 15 other cars.
The trail is a self contained boardwalk that starts by traveling over marshy lowlands and then transitioning into a small area of giant red cedars. This transition caught me by surprise. The marsh area was covered by low lying plants that masked the streams and mud that laid beneath. There were giant ferns edging the path that made me think they were just the right size for a hungry brontosaurus. With these low lying plants I would have thought that I would have been able to see and appreciate the trees to come. I was completely amazed at the trees when I saw them. The cedars were huge  . Very reminiscent of the redwoods in Yosemite. There were not very many of them, but what there were stood out in a big way. This is an excellent trail. Accessible to all. Short, with a nice payoff. Definitely worth the visit.
We were very lucky. Everyone was leaving as we were walking in so we had the boardwalk and the red cedars to ourselves. An excellent stop along the way. |
