| partners | | A little leg-stretcher along the river. From the end of FR 566A we headed downhill on the old two-track now called Golconda Trail 173. About a mile in we opted for the singletrack on Box Trail 617 traversing the steep slope above the river.
At Lick Creek we followed an old overgrown unsigned but pretty-well-trodden doubletrack down to the river. After a wet crossing we connected to West Mancos 621 and headed upstream to the historic Golconda townsite. There were no signs of historic structures as I might have hoped, just plenty of old fencing.
From here we could have lasso'd back on 173 but we opted to continue upstream on 621 to reach the Owens Basin Connector Trail 183. This trail crossed the river and brought us back to Golconda 173 about 3/4mi from the trailhead (though we cut a corner on an illegal dirtbike singletrack we spotted in the aspens).
I wasn't thrilled to hike back up this hill on the rocky old road, but it was short and over relatively quickly.
On the drive back to camp we stopped for the view along Rampart Hills and trail 166. |
