| partners | | Apparently the good doctor from tucson decided to make this qualify as a peak so I decided it would be fun to rub Jack off my list.
It was 95 leaving town predawn. Still 85 in Green Valley. Didn't drop into the 70s until entering the recreation area. Somehow a delightful 68 a the trailhead. A bit humid on the climb to the saddle. At the last minute we decided to do the quick out-n-back to Wrightson before continuing on the Jack loop.
About 16 separate hikers were making the early ascent and we managed to get ahead of all but one of them. After a nice break on the 63-degree summit we encountered all of them between there and the saddle.
It has rained plenty on the range this year, and the summer growth of was prolific. Convective clouds began to build over the peak and it seemed we had gotten our timing right. Cloudiness tempered any heat buildup on the return until the buildup moved to the south without giving us any rain.
After the side trip to Baldy2 we continued on the main loop, making sure to take the side trip to Jack. The trip down Carrie Nation was steep and generally rough on my feet at this point in the day. Temps here finally regained the 80s, which had been expected, but was surprisingly nice to have been as cool for as long as it had been. There was water in the creek below the spring, with some pools and light flow in places, along with some dry stretches.
The parking lot was 92, and it was over 100 less than 2 miles down the road. Still quite a nice little mountain break on an otherwise insanely hot day. (It was 50 degrees higher when we got home ) Thanks 9L for driving! |

| | Springbox was dry and appears to be permanently nonfunctional. Just 50 feet up the drainage from the trail were ample pools of clear water and a trickling cascade from above. | | _____________________
