I would have liked to do more in this area, but a fire at Redfish Lake and several fires in Oregon had this place pretty socked in with smoke. Although, that being said, we were able to get one nearly perfect day in the backcountry, before the smoke engulfed us pretty good on the second day.
The Born Lakes would make a great day hike from the Fourth of July Trailhead, however, its tough to beat a night on a backcountry lake in this area, regardless of its proximity to a major trailhead. I also thought there might be a chance to hike the off trail pass over to some of the other Lakes, or at least to a nice view of them. However, it only took one glance at the route on the way to our campsite to know it wasn't going to be Dot friendly. The hike in was short and the trail was in great condition, as most of them are in this area. The views were pretty stunning on the hike in, but I had seen most of them a couple years ago, when I day hiked up to the Antz Basin Pass during a three day backpack. Despite their smaller sizes, the lakes were scenic and their backdrops stunning. In particular, the final and largest of the Born Lakes. Without much exploring to do around camp, we just enjoyed a long day on a scenic lake, without many bugs, which was a relief.
A smoky second day and quick, uneventful hike out. |
