In search of new routes to hike I decided to hike to Whiterock Mesa from the Doll Baby trailhead which is the end of FR406 that is reached by turning left off of SR87 onto Main Street in Payson and going straight from there for about 11 miles. There is a large amount of road construction equipment on FR406 and it is in better condition now than I have ever seen it. There are signs saying to expect delays up to 2 hours Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Fortunately I was there at 7:30 AM and didn't leave until 4:30 PM. Weekends are probably fine. It looks like there is property development work ongoing for some sort of resort that might happen about half way to the trailhead.

The hike to Whiterock Mesa is on the Saddle Ridge trail that is part of the Arizona Trail (AZT). From the Doll Baby TH you must hike 3.7 miles on a closed 4WD dirt road to get to the AZT and the Saddle Ridge trail. The hike then proceeds along AZT passage 25 which continues past where I turned around to FR194. This offers a possibility for a one-way shuttle hike. All of this is shown on the map shown on the last picture of the photoset. There is one wet crossing of the East Verde River and where I switched to TEVAs to keep my boots dry. It was an easy crossing in TEVAs in about a foot of water at the deepest when hiking near the shallow mini-rapids you can see in the picture.

The roads/trails are basically easy to hike which allowed me to do 17 miles. I would not rate this hike too highly. It has some magnificent scenery and it was great to be out there by myself with only a sky full of blackbirds at one point who thought I might be their lunch. But I'm spoiled now and expect more. I did suck in a lot of clean fresh air and had a great exercise. Whiterock Mesa was the nicest spot on the trek.
