| no partners | | This was my fourth time doing the See Drew Loop so I chose some different routing. For the first time I did the pilgrimage to See Spring which was fun but not that impressive. I was spoiled by Horton Spring and this does not compare. Crossing on top I chose to follow the General Crook trail from the See Canyon trail for 4.2 miles to its intersection with the Drew trail. That is the North-East endpoint of the Drew trail so I got to hike the entire 1.6 mile Drew trail. The General Crook has a surprising amount of grassy meadow along the way. For first time hikers of this loop it is better to drop down to FR9350 after 2 miles on the General Crook and hike FR9350 to the Drew trail at the rim because there are plenty of views from the rim on this route and that is a highlight of doing the loop.
In his 2006 trip report HAZ member weasel pointed out that there was no fence at the Drew/Highline intersection that Joe described in the Drew write-up. This was true for my three previous hikes of the Drew trail but I was surprised to see that a brand spanking new fence has been built at this same location. It has a zig-zag gate rather than the wooden gate of the prior one but there is a fence and gate there now so the intersection of the Drew and Highline trails is unmistakably marked. I have included a couple of pictures of the new gate in my photos for the hike.
Note that the See Canyon trail has a lot of deadfall on the middle 2 miles of the trail making it somewhat of an obstacle course for this segment. |
