Early morning hike at SoMo. I wanted to continue my progress on the Gila Trail. (The Gila has changed quite a bit over the last few years and I had wanted to get stats on the new alignment. I had unsuccessfully tried to do a loop involving the Gila a month ago and ended up bailing at the National/Prospector Loop junction).

Got to the new Lost Ranch/Bursera TH. around 5am with about 6 other cars. The new TH is about 100 yards west of the old one so the mileage for the hikes won’t change that much. I took Lost Ranch to where it connects to the Lost Ranch Mine Trail (the western segment of Prospector Loop) and took that up to the National. This is where I left off on my last visit. At this point, I was 2.23 miles into the hike. I continued east on the National with a brief side trip up Goat Hill. (The Goat Hill excursion only adds about .3 miles to the hike). Made it there just before sunrise, grabbed a few picks and continued on. I reached the Gila/National juncture around 4.58 miles and then took the Gila (previously known as the Pyramid Trail) back to the wash where it intersects the Lost Ranch Trail at 6.95. After descending Sooth Mountain, crossing a wash and climbing a small saddle you will need to make a right (at the saddle) to make this connection. Here, I turned onto the Lost Ranch Trail and took it back to the TH.

If you were looking to do all of the Gila Trail, the trails continues in the wash before climbing up and over a saddle to the west. The trail ends about 2 miles later when in connects to the Bursera Trail.

So the “current” stats for this trail are about 4.5 miles (one way) and about 1800 AEG. This doesn’t sound too bad on its own, but what goes in must come out. Plus, this is an interior trail, so additional hiking is needed to reach it. I say “current”, because there is a decent chance the alignment may change again.

Hiked the first hour with a headlamp. Cool temps with a nice breeze. Didn’t see my first hiker until I neared the Gila juncture. No wildlife. Encountered 19 hikers, 3 bikers a 1 runner.
