This caused me to change my plans slightly and start at the TH off of Thunderbird and Canterbury. Going CC, this makes Shaw Butte the first mountain. (Typically, I start at 7th Ave and do North Mountain first). Got on the trail around 5:15am. Still dark out, but enough light to hike the road up. Took some pictures at the top and then continued around the west side of Shaw Butte. When I reached the valley I took the Christiansen over to where it connects to the Maxine Larkin Trail. About the midway point on the Maxine loop there is a use trail that I use to take me to the top of North Mountain. Interestingly, looking at the official GPS route, I noticed that the route up North Mountain is quite a bit different than the one I take. I don’t think I’ve ever used that route to ascend North Mountain. At the top, I touched the fence and then took the road down to what is now signed as the 101 “Phoenix Mountain Preserve” Trail. This trail forks at the saddle and I took the trail that headed back into the valley. I then used the Christiansen and a couple of use trails to get back to the TH. Weather was great. Not much wildlife except for quail and chipmunks. Quite a few users enjoying the early morning. 54 hikers, 4 runners and 1 biker. |
