Day 5 of 5 in Utah

It’s a long drive back, so we decided to break it up with a couple of short hikes off SR89.

The Belly of the Dragon

I had no idea what to expect with this one, but I liked the name. You reach the "Belly" right off the bat by crossing under SR89. It’s a natural tunnel formed by flowing water. We hiked in 2 miles before turning around. Most people turn around at either 0.3 or 1.3 miles, where there are easy bypasses past dryfalls.

I later read that 4 miles in, the trail reaches Elkhart Cliffs Slot Canyon, which might be a worthy destination.

Sand Caves

This is another touristy destination, best avoided on weekends. It’s a neat area to explore, but unfortunately, modern carvings in the sandstone outnumber the ancient etchings.

All-in-all a great first trip to hike in Utah for me. anxious to go back.

Thanks to Kelly for arranging for our accommodations and to John for all his driving.
