| partners | | Linda asked me to come up with a hike for today, and I decided to take her to the Gates of Hell.
It had been 11 years since I’d done this hike, so some of what I’d told Linda to expect was a bit suspect—like that it’s mainly downhill getting to Hellsgate. It was actually uphill right from the start, climbing 200 feet right off the bat (1,000 feet of accumulated elevation gain to get to Haigler Creek).
We wore jackets, hats, and gloves for the first mile to fend off the 24-degree start.
Clear skies offered good views of the surrounding landscape. After a short break at the El Grande Tank, we completed the descent to the Gates of Hell.
Water was flowing, birds were chirping, and the fall colors were just beginning to show. You could tell Linda felt completely at home here.
The climb back up was easier than expected. This time, we had lunch at the tank before finishing our hike.
It was great to get back out here and hike in nearly perfect weather. |
