| no partners | | This was a hike to the highpoint of the Tat Momoli Mountains, which are in Pinal County within the Tohono O'odham Nation. The unnamed highpoint is at an elevation of 2,600 feet and it has clean prominence of 1,055 feet. I requested permission from the Tohono O'odham Nation to do this hike, and they kindly granted my request.
As for etymology, the Papago word tat translates to "foot", and the Pagago word mumeri translates to "run". Pima Indians held foot races in this area, which resulted in the name Tat Momoli being used for the mountains. It was said that some of the participants were so fast that they could catch a jack rabbit, which was no doubt the origin for the name of the nearby Jack Rabbit Mine, aka Jackrabbit Mine. This mine began in the 1880's and produced silver for several years.
I parked SW of the peak and began by hiking across the desert floor. Then I went up a slope, sidehilled around a subpeak, and made my way to a saddle on the ridgeline south of the peak. I went up the ridgeline to a false summit and then made my way to the highpoint. From the highpoint I continued north along the ridgeline to another slightly lower peak that contained the flivers. I located the benchmark and both reference marks, all of which were stamped "Jack", no doubt short for the Jackrabbit Mine.
I returned the way that I came.
I enjoy hiking these lower elevation desert peaks this time of year. The going was a bit slow for me though -- there were lots of loose basalt rocks to hike on, and the cholla was plentiful in places. |
