| no partners | | This was a hike to the summit of Mud Mountain (elevation of 5,800 feet and prominence of 1,230 feet), which is in the vast expanse of land known as the Arizona Strip.
The Arizona Strip is a forgotten piece of land in NW Arizona that is north of the Grand Canyon and south of the Utah border. It is about the size of the state of Massachusetts and is very isolated and remote -- there are no paved roads, no gas stations, no convenience markets. This is not a place to get stranded.
I had no beta on this hike, but after looking at a topo map I decided to hike from the north by going up some slopes from the NW to a ridge from the north that went to the peak. This worked out pretty well -- there was a good bit of P&J on the slopes, but it wasn't too heavy. There was a bit of class 2 and a single, short class 3 move a 100 feet or so below the summit.
The summit was a large flat area that had some great views. I wandered around for a bit to hopefully hit the highpoint, and located the benchmark and both reference marks, which were not at the highest point. A summit register was near the flivers, and I was the first person to sign the log in 4 1/2 years.
I returned the way that I came. |
