| no partners | | I did 3 different hikes in Imperial County, CA, with each hike going to a wilderness area high point:
1) High point of the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area (elevation of 500 feet and prominence of 126 feet)
2) High point of the Milpitas Wash Wilderness Area (elevation of 875 feet and prominence of zero)
3) Well Benchmark, the high point of the Buzzards Peak Wilderness Area (elevation of 1,604 feet and prominence of 484 feet)
North Algodones Dunes
(7.67 miles with 859 feet of AEG)
This wilderness area is about 8 miles wide and 40 miles long, and it encompasses one of the largest dune complexes in North America. I had to walk about 3 miles across the sand to get to the area with the highest dunes. The sandy walk wasn't all that great, but it was pretty cool going up on the dunes. I marked waypoints for the 3 highest dunes, and I thought that the one to the SE was the highest.
Milpitas Wash
(0.17 miles with 4 feet of AEG)
This was basically a mailbox hike. I parked at a curve in the road and walked over to the highpoint, which is about 50 feet off the road.
Well Benchmark
(4.33 miles with 753 feet of AEG)
On this hike I was in a wash for about 1.5 miles, and then went up a steep slippery slope to the peak. I found the benchmark and one reference mark. On the descent I followed a ridgeline back around and took it down to the wash. This avoided the steep, slippery slope that I went up on my ascent. |
