Day 2 Backpack of 4: day trip to Granite Rapid.

Quick and easy trip to granite rapid. Beautiful to see the rapid and hear the water and see all its power! Glorious!

No people probably because of the weather shenanigans. Pretty area all around the rapid.

Trail is signed and straightforward to follow to the rapid. It leaves Tonto at a signed junction and switchbacks down to the Monument Creek river bed. The remainder of the trail is in the riverbed.

Day 2 of 4 Backpack: Granite Rapid to Monument Creek Campsite.

Detoured to Granite Rapid campsite before heading back up Monument creek. The Granite Rapid campsite is really beautiful with a swimming hole right next to it and a bunch of big trees. It would really be a nice place to camp!

After checking it out, we headed back up to Monument Creek campsite. At the cairn marking the trail back up to the junction, we decided to head up the slot Canyon instead. We followed the riverbed for a while. We came upon a waterfall that would have been easy to scale up dry. I didn't want to get wet due to cold temperatures, and the other methods up were sketchy to me. One of our party took a boost up and we passed him his pack. He said there was one slightly sketchy obstacle, and then a bunch a slick road to climb up to the campsite which would normally be fine but was slippery in the rain.

The remainder of us backtracked to the trail. One took a shortcut in hopes that it lead back to the trail, but instead he was on top of the Mesa next to the Monument. But there is no way to get around the Monument and back to the trail. Just dropoffs, and he had to backtrail to the cairn.

Meanwhile, 2 of us started up the trail only to miss the swift back immediately to the left, and instead we continued up the wash to the right of the trail. After not too long, it was apparent that this was not the trail. 🤣🤣 We turned around and headed down. From this angle, it was easy to see the switchback we missed along with a small cairn. From here it was smooth sailing up the switchbacks and back to camp. There are some spectacular views in this area.
