I was looking for an appropriate hike for St. Patrick's Day weekend, and I figured that Greenwood Peak would be a good choice. It was either that or join forces with the HAZMaster to drive snakes out of Ireland!

Greenwood Peak is in the Poachie range in Mohave County, and is roughly half-way between Wickenburg and Kingman. Greenwood Peak is at an elevation of 4,339 feet and it has prominence of 1,019 feet. The peak has a pointed shape like a pyramid, and is easily visible and recognizable from Highway 93.

As for etymology, Greenwood Peak was named because of the numerous palo verde trees that are in the area. Back in the 1870's there was a mining community here named Greenwood, and a mill was built to smelt ore from the Greenwood gold mine. However, the ore quality turned out to be too poor to make the operation profitable, so the town faded into the dustbin of history.

I drove in about 6 miles from Highway 83 on Sevenmile Road. The road is hard-packed dirt and when dry would be ok for a sedan in its current condition. I would not want to drive on the road when wet however.

There is no trail on the hike, and it was mostly hiking through open country, although there was lots of cactaceae and agavaceae to weave around. In some places the cholla was very dense.

There was quite a bit of grus type gravel which was very slippery on slopes. For that reason it was better to stick to ridgelines rather than sidehilling to avoid some elevation gain/loss.

The summit block was made of granite boulders, which looked intimidating from distance. Fortunately it was not as bad as it looked, and the climb through the boulders was not bad. I took it a step at the time, and before I knew it I was looking at wood, wires, and a disc.

I located the benchmark and both reference marks. The benchmark was stamped "Greenwood 1965", whereas the reference marks were stamped with the year only.

The summit area was not real large, but it had some nice views so I stayed up there for a bit while eating lunch. I went back the way that I came.

In spite of the sometimes slippery tread and the cholla, I enjoyed this hike, especially the scramble at the top.
