This was a hike to the summit of Salome Peak (elevation of 3,991 feet and prominence of 1,231 feet). Salome Peak is the high point of the Grand Wash Mountains, and is NW of the town of Salome.

I drove in and parked next to the Salome Prison. The prison is a natural hole underneath a massive granite boulder. There is a granite bench inside the hole with granite steps leading down to it. There were once eyebolts in the bench that were used to secure the prisoners, but the bolts are no longer there, having been vandalized.

This is a short hike, but there is a good bit of elevation gain relative to the distance. There are lots of car-sized (and larger) granite boulders to go up, over, and around all the way to the summit. In between many of the boulders is some onerous vegetation to deal with. The last 500 feet or so of vertical is very steep, and is slippery in places.

I was glad that I wore some grippy approach shoes for this hike.

I located the 2 reference marks at the summit, but did not see the benchmark, which was likely underneath a large cairn. The reference marks were actually benchmark disks that were doing duty as reference marks.

There were nice 360 degree views at the summit so I hung out there for a bit.

On the way back down I heard and saw 10-12 ATV's driving up the road. When I got back to the TH they were still there, but were preparing to leave. Apparently the prison is a popular destination for ATVers.

Judging by the summit register entries, not many people hike to this peak -- it is not easy to get to and it is a fairly difficult hike.

There were some ocotillo blooms, but that was it.
