Started the holiday weekend with a paddle on the Salt...glad to have managed to convince my friends who suggested the date to get a relatively early start, as it looked like it was going to be an extra busy day on the river. Overnight releases were just over 1000cfs, but by the time we got on the water, the releases had dropped to just over 900cfs.

After some brief confusion with vehicle consolidation at PhonD, we headed up to Water Users where the lot looked to be quickly filling up. We joined a bunch of folk down at the shoreline to put in, and quickly started off downstream. It was easy to gain some separation, and even with a decent number of folk on the water, we were able to get stretches where there weren't any others close by.

As we passed the other put in points, it was clear that the day (and weekend) were going to be busy on the river, with plenty of folk with popups set up along the shore, and lots more planning to float or paddle. One thing I noticed is that I am not cut out to just "float" the river - I get bored sitting there with my paddle idle - admittedly, it could be that I don't like being caught up in crowds, and sitting idle was a sure fire way to get caught up with passles of strangers all around.

Wildlife: the usual suspects...ducks, great blue heron, great egret, snowy egret, swallows, red winged blackbirds, turkey vultures, and several groups of horses.

By the time we took out, all of the parking areas were full with people circling waiting for parking spots, making me extra glad we got started early in the day.

Unfortunately, while we were on the river, we heard a bunch of sirens along Power Road. I had anticipated increased DUI monitoring - sadly, the sirens were due to a drowning near one of the put in points - a reminder to wear a PFD whenever on the water.

Happier when hiking....I may not move fast (and I'm often distracted by wildflowers), but I'll get there eventually 😆
