Arrived at the put in after disturbing a committee of turkey vultures that were congregated in the parking area. The early morning light at the lake was beautiful with clear skies and little to no breeze - and even better, not a motorized boat in sight! Quickly got the gear out and set off across the lake, stopping first to swing into the cove housing Mormon Flat Dam before continuing on up canyon for a bit. As we were heading up canyon, things started warming up quickly with the sun clearing the cliff walls, with the occasional motor boat passing through. After checking out a few alcoves and the section of the lake widening out again, we decided to turn back and head for First Water Cove for a snack break before eventually calling it a day and heading back to our cars. The breeze had picked up a little as we were heading back in, making paddling a little more challenging, though it didn't seem to have any appreciable cooling effect - by the time we got back to the vehicles, temps were over 100F.
It was wonderful to be on the lake with so little traffic and with the surface so calm, though it was a shame that the air quality was so poor. At some point, I'd love to paddle up to Horse Mesa Dam or as close to it as I can get, though that would be a long day indeed - better to attempt in slightly cooler weather while the days are still reasonably long.
Wildlife: It was a great day at the lake with sightings of Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, American Coot, Double Crested Cormorants, a Bald Eagle, and three bighorn sheep! Also saw numerous fish jumping for breakfast, but wasn't able to identify any. |

Happier when hiking....I may not move fast (and I'm often distracted by wildflowers), but I'll get there eventually |
