A mid-week escape to get some very much needed outdoor time in...switched things up and hit the river in the late afternoon - the previous times I've paddled the salt, I've been on the water early.

Met up at PhonD to air up (another first!), load the trucks, and head up to Pebble Beach to put in. The river was at the highest flow for my paddles so far this year at just over 700cfs. Reading the water was a little challenging with the position and angle of the sun....I'm used to having the sun at my back for the paddle - but with the late afternoon, I was facing into it the entire time. This also made for challenging lighting for photography - but that allowed me to focus more on being immediately present, not a bad thing!

There were a decent number of other folk on the river paddling, but it remained quite peaceful. Hadn't had much luck spotting any wild horses thus far this year, but this trip was graced with a number of groups - including a number of horses at the mud cliffs, where the group that I was paddling with stopped for a brief snack break.

Other wildlife: ducks, Canada geese, herons, red winged blackbirds, nighthawks, and bats! Also, there were stretches where the insects seemed blissfully absent, but as the sun headed towards the horizon, the bugs started to get thick enough that I donned a bug net over my hat. We hit PhonD after sundown, with just enough light to make it up the hill to the parking lot before full darkness set in.

It was fantastic to outside and see the salt during a different time of day and see some different wildlife activity.

Happier when hiking....I may not move fast (and I'm often distracted by wildflowers), but I'll get there eventually 😆
