| no partners | | Short hike today, but it was a pretty one. Long drive in, where I saw turkeys, deer, and a moose. Got started on the hike just after 1100. Temp was 48 degrees. It had rained lightly all night, so the trail was muddy. I used a trekking pole to try and knock water off the vegatation, but I still got pretty soaked. It’s a steep climb uphill, but really didn’t feel too bad with the cool temps. Ate a bunch of barely ripened huckleberries, this trail has a ton of them. The little scramble at the summit was fun. Low clouds hid some of the views, but it was still gorgeous. Breezy up top. I walked west a little bit to see where the trail continued over that edge. Might try from that side one of these days. Slippery, muddy descent, but I managed to stay upright.
Saw one guy about a mile from the finish. He had an awesome looking rifle, so we ended up talking for a moment. I asked him how the road was between the trailhead and Johnson Saddle and he said it was rough in places, but fine. I opted to drive out that direction to see which way I liked more. While it’s about half the forest road drive to go north to Clark Fork, the extra highway miles makes the total drive about 15 minutes longer. Still nice to have driven the entire back way to Clark Fork though. Pretty day with the clouds. Fun little hike, and a scenic drive. |
