| no partners | | Not sure on the exact stats probably 14-15 miles and a couple thousand feet of climbing and a few thousand lost. Did this one as shuttle... Started from Carr Peak Trail and ended at the parking lot at Brown Canyon Trailhead.
Trail conditions were solid overall. Carr Peak Trail is in great shape all the way to the summit. The Crest Trail over to Bear Saddle is overgrown in places, but the tread remains good. Hamburg Trail down Wisconsin Canyon is as expected, with just one tree down as an obstacle. Hamburg through Ramsey Canyon is in great shape all the way to the junction of Brown Canyon Trail. Brown Canyon Trail climbing up from Ramsey is steep and overgrown, but not terrible. Once it crests out at the first high point, the trail stays in great shape all the way down to the ranch.
The weather was good overall, though a bit warm for the start of November. Overnight lows were in the high 40s at Ramsey Vista Campground and just above 40°F in the bottom of Ramsey Canyon.
As for fall color? Pretty much as expected. The aspens up high are done, probably peaked around mid to late October. The scrub and Gambel oak up top are mostly past peak too, though a few pockets are still hanging on. Down in the canyons, Ramsey and Wisconsin are showing some color, but it’s patchy and fairly muted overall.
And for water? If you’re doing this as a longer day hike, you’ll find reliable water at the Tub, some pockets along Wisconsin Canyon, likely a few spots in Pat Scott (once it’s cleared), intermittent flow through sections of Ramsey Canyon, and the trough in Brown Canyon is full of water.
Few other things of note: quite a bit of odd garbage in the canyon, likely from the September and October floods. We saw a trail crew working in Pat Scott Canyon, which took heavy flood damage in October. And if you’re driving up to Ramsey Vista or Reef Townsite to spend the night? The road is rough… There are about four rough spots that’ll require careful driving in a sedan but I would advise against it. Realistically, it’s best tackled with a high-clearance vehicle. |

Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate Mostly wrapped up along the ridges above 8,000 feet. A few pockets of aspen still hanging on below Miller. Wisconsin, Pat Scott, and Ramsey are nearing peak with the maples, while Brown Canyon has a few isolated patches of color. Overall, not a great year for fall color. |
