| no partners | | Since the weather stayed cool, I decided to check out the ruins and rock art based on the hike description. Apparently the trail has been re-routed since the description. There is no question as to what trail to take as there is only one. It is well signed at the junction with Deadman Pass. Off I went, ipod music on, to the trail register. Comments like "great scenery", "?", 'helicopter noise", etc but nothing about ruins/art. Hmm. Lost my head in the beautiful day, wildflowers, feeling great, when I realized I hadn't seen the creek-side walls with the ruins and the helicopters had stopped. Took out the GPS and surprise, I had gone 5 miles! Just where does this trail end? I think the forest service has changed the trail to limit knowledge/visitation of the ruins. Turned around, went back to the 3 mile mark and started looking for some way up on Maroon Mountain, thinking that would be where I would build ruins. At an old campsite among huge junipers, I found a faint trail across the dry creek bed that led uphill. Eureka! Found several dwellings in small alcoves with dug up floors (looted?) and alot of rusted metal from old cans and barrels (still?). Spied ruins on up the rocks in an alcove and had to check them out. Found handholds carved in the ledge for access. Just a few pictos. The ceiling in the large alcove has caved in at some point--the smoke soot is on the slabs on the ground. It looked like someone had used equipment to remove pieces of the walls--like the art had been looted. Sad. Back down to the main trail and a cool one in the car (water). |
