| partners | | Last month when I did the 2881 Consensus Loop with Andy, we found these equestrian trails. I went into the Route Editor and turned on the satellite aerials and mapped out a small system of the trails looking where I saw them. Andy and I did the loop to Bagley Tank a week later. this week I decided to make the trek out to Bagley Flat and invited Wally and Brian.
Started in the dark, which I don't recommend. We missed the first turn, which was Ok because I had enough tracks made to know that if we stayed on the trail we were on, it would get to where we were going. Wally and Brian hadn't downloaded my tracks. At one point asked if we were back on the track we intended. I told him no, but if it makes you feel better, then yes.
This took up past where Andy and I had hiked along the ridge of the canyon around Bagley Tank, which we could see on this hike from above. At the turnoff to head down, we continued northbound. We all missed the next turn to Bagley Flat because the junction was disguised with a pile of brush. It seems like someone doesn't want anyone to hike down to this area. Once we discovered our error and got back on track, the trail was faint at first, and then was easier to follow.
The trail to us to a saddle, and from there was the big descent. One 500' descent on a very steep and loose trail, a pain to hike along. The trail flattened for a bit and then took another steep descent. After that it crossed a drainage and up Bagley Flat, which is more like Bagley Mesa. We got a little past where I stopped my track because I couldn't see any more trails. Wally and Brian kept hiking uphill, over the ridge, and were nearly to the next ridge and out of my sight when I gave a yell. They started back, but then Brian wanted to hike a little further to see over the next ridge. He reported that the trail continued on as far as he could see. I knew I was as far in as I could go and I was done exploring for the day.
The last mile and a half back was a slog. The downhills were getting annoying. everything was steep and loose, as it always is in the Goldfields. The sun was out and made the scenery really amazing, though, so that helped. got 3300' for the day, which I'm feeling now.
Very nice to check this area out and show it to other people. Brian talked about making a hike description, but since he's retired and I'm not, I'm sure his love of the Goldfields will inspire him to have a description posted by Monday morning . |
