It’s been a while since I have ventured into Barks Canyon. My hiking buddy Jackson has never been in this area, so we decided to hit it before the heat makes it a “next year” hike.

I have done this loop clockwise and counterclockwise. It’s a matter of which torture do you prefer. Up the Cave Trail with all of the crazy bits below the cave or the constant up and wildness of Barks Canyon. We opted for counterclockwise and started up Bluff Springs towards the Barks Canyon “turn-off”.

The weather was nice, but windy. The parking lot had some vehicles, but not as many as I expected. It’s looking like Peralta Road is getting ready for some big changes. They closed the Carney Springs Trail (bulldozed it) and are now directing all WaveCavers to park at the Lost Gold Mine TH.

The hike up Cardiac Hill was the usual frolicking in the desert. It looks like the rains we had earlier really made things bloom. But, it also looks like things are starting to dry out. Lots of brittle bush and even some globe mallows, fairy dusters and daisies still blooming. I saw my first hedgehog cacti blooms too.

The first time I hiked in here, many years ago, the path was not very clear. Some cairns helped, but there was a lot of route finding required. This time, the path is much clearer and there were many cairns all along the way. What remained the same was the up and down between the little valleys and the steep hike out at the end.

This part of Barks Canyon is an amazing place. All the unique formations and spires. It’s a cathedral of granite for sure. I love it.

We made up to the Lone Pine and had our pictures and a little rest and then started down towards the Cave Trail. Jackson has never been on this trail, so I was excited to see the expression on his face when we hit the Devil’s Slide area. That is always enjoyable. The path is really clear in most spots, except for the last bit when you hike down towards Bluff Springs.

The winds stopped and with no clouds, it was getting a little toasty at the end. Nothing compared to what is coming though.

A nice day in the Supes for sure. We took our time and enjoyed the amazing scenery.
