Chris has been trying to get me back out on his AZT quest and this one sounded actually doable. A long, but mostly flat stroll in the pines.

We left Steelers Mesa Headquarters at about 515am and made it up to the TH just before 8am. It a pleasant “chilly” as we started off.

Right off, Wally and I saw a couple of Elk in the first pond. Before I could pull my camera up, they bolted. We saw a small herd of Elk a few miles later off in the distance. We saw more critters along the road going up and back than on the trail.

Chris had a track that went a little over 9 miles for an out and back. We went a little further and stopped for a lunch break.

I kinda sorta kept up with Wally the first 5 miles. By the time we made it to 8 miles Chris caught up and passed me. Going back, Wally turned on the jets and left us in the dust. I could see Chris ahead me for most of the way back.

This trail was a nice forest hike with very gradual up and downs. The trail had a few rocky sections, but more dirt/pine needle sections. All the pines provided some nice shade along most of the trail. The weather was very pleasant all day. A few clouds rolled in later made it even more pleasant.

I was feeling it on the way back. It’s been a while since I have hiked this far. But, looking at my mile splits, I kept a very steady pace the entire hike. So, I am good with that.

I had the usual aches and pains afterwards but felt ok the day after. Good to know I can still knock out a longer hike.

Thanks for the invite Chris and it’s always nice to hike with Wally.
