Closest place to stay to the trailhead at Hualapai Hilltop -- just over an hour drive away. The evening before we did the cavern tour and dinner in the cavern. The tour was interesting, and dining in the cavern a couple hundred feet underground was a unique experience. The motel served breakfast starting at 4:00am, and we decided to be there when it opened. When my phone alarm went off just after 3:00am I turned on the room light but it didn't turn on. There was no power in the motel. Luckily I had a headlamp. I dressed, packed my stuff, and went to the breakfast room which was also dark. Ate some yogurt and cold cereal. We brought in our jet boil and had some instant coffee too before driving to the trailhead. We arrived in the pre-dawn twilight and ended up having to park quite a ways up the road from the trail.
The hike down as the sun came up was beautiful. The sun hit the tops of the cliffs and there were interesting rock formations all around. The trail starts out fairly steep for the first 1.5 miles from the top of the cliffs until it gets to the valley floor. Then it winds through a narrow canyon for most of the way. Eventually it opens into forest and then into the village of Supai. After the village the trail goes past the beautiful Havasu Falls. The water is an unreal shade of turquoise which contrasts with the reddish sandstone and the white water going over the falls. Absolutely gorgeous.
The trail leveled off again as we reached the start of the campground. We found a nice spot that had tent sites for our whole group on an island between two streams and set up camp. A great start to our Havasupai trip. |
