They were finding spots as people were pulling out. I had done nearly one complete lap and was resigned to going around again. The car in front of me was waiting for a car to back out, and as he was waiting the car in the next spot also was starting to back out. Score! I was able to park in an actual parking space!
Bursera trail had even more poppies in bloom than the last time I was here a few weeks ago. Spectacular seeing the north-facing slopes along Bursera covered in yellow flowers. Also more lupines than last time too.
I was going to take the regular route, but when I got to the bottom of Bursera where it heads up the canyon I decided instead to take Gila trail westbound. I like this westernmost section of Gila as it is never crowded. It added about a half mile to the loop.
The climb up National trail was starting to feel very warm in the bright sun and no wind. Once I got up to the ridge line there was a breeze which helped a lot. Stopped for a short snack break on top of Goat Hill. One of the stepping stone rocks just below the top has fallen onto the rock below it which was a little awkward, but not too bad. I picked up the pace after the break and made good time on the last few miles back to the trailhead. A great day hiking. |
