Once you turn onto 172, within less than four miles (near Elephant Arch), there’s a major washout. They’ve done some recent work with front-end loaders to fix the damage, but it’s still pretty rough through that section. The work continues for most of the way to the TH. It’s still rough in places, but I only scraped the bottom once.
We were the only car in the lot for a pre-8 a.m. start at 47 degrees. The trail is in mostly good condition all the way to the ranch. We took a tour of the orchard to check out the trees. At first, we saw no blooms, but it appears we were a week or so past peak bloom. Looks like there will be apples in the fall.
It also appears there will be a bumper crop of foxtails, luckily, most of them were still green.
After lunch in the meadow, we headed back. We passed five thru-hikers and chatted with them for a bit. They were from Florence, Scottsdale, Canada, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
Back at the TH, the temperature never got warmer than 67. The breezes throughout the day made it a wonderfully comfortable hike. |
