| partners | | Another trip up to the Highline to continue our slow trek towards completion. We wanted to link up to the section we stopped at last week, so we drove up to the Hatchery TH and started west. The trail has a small reroute right at the start, then follows the old alignment for a bit. The trail follows a couple of nice areas of 'Sedona-ish' rock formations while passing through a couple of small pine forests. The climb up to Roberts Mesa has a long reroute moving north to south, which definitely added some mileage. This was our stopping point last week, and we took a quick break there before heading back east. We continued east from the Hatchery TH, spending some time in the beautiful Tonto Creek area. From there, the trail has a small climb with some switchbacks from a recent reroute, climbing to the top of a small ridge before a slight descent into Dick Williams Creek, which was our stopping point for the day. We did not explore this area too much; however, from where we stopped, it is a nice riparian pine forest with a good flow in the creek.
Tons of Elk prints and scat, but no sightings; however, we did hear one being pretty vocal on a flat area a bit below us. A good amount of fresh bear tracks on top of Roberts Mesa and to the east of Tonto Creek. Came across one solo backpacker heading west and a group of two heading to Washington Park from 260, and that was it. The weather was good with a nice breeze, with it being just a little warm up on the ridge near Dick Williams Creek. Another piece checked off, we are slowly but surely getting there. |
