When I left the hotel in Laughlin, NV this morning, at 5:00am, it was already 91 degrees. I stopped at the Safeway in Kingman to pick up some power bars and arrived at the trailhead at 6:15am. It was 70 degrees at the trailhead. I had planned to do the 4.4 mile loop hike as I described in my hike description but, the morning was so nice I took the side trip up the Aspen Peak Trail. On the way down from Aspen Peak I found an unsigned trail heading down to the Boy Scout Camp. This shortcut apparently only saved me 0.5 miles. On the Potato patch Trail I came up on two Elk. After a few minutes of staring at each other, they finally walked off. I got back to the trailhead at 9:45 and the temperature was about 80. When I got back to Laughlin at 11:00am it was 106. What a great place to escape the summer heat in Bullhead City. |
