| Without a doubt an awesome group, great to meet everybody! This venture is definitely out of my current ability. Everybody except Sir Hillary Pete bailed at the saddle between peaks 2 and 3. Temperature, snow and ice didn't hamper the effort as many predicted. In fact there wasn't any in the truly tricky spots. Five days before Christmas Arizona pumped out 66 degrees. The coldest reading I took all day was on the way home at 51.5 degrees.
Being the weakest link I think it's only appropriate I give a big fat thanks to Kenny & Brad for getting my carcass out alive. Pete (as always) went on a mission & actually completed all four peaks. Brad, Tom, George & Kenny probably could have made it too if they hadn't so kindly waited on the rest of us.
The terrain was insane for myself to put it lightly. Although it was nearly vertical at points it didn't scare me as much as I originally figured. That part was almost cool. The scary part was the lack of hand/foot holds in sections where you had to slide or free drop about a foot. If you didn't make contact you probably wouldn't live, it's serious stuff.
7:16 am Start
8:40 am Amethyst Mine
90 am Pete & I did Rock-Paper-Scissors at Y junction
10:13 am almost up Peak 1
I pretty much ran out of water (100 ozs) shortly after the 1st Peak
Which of course led to the worst thigh cramps I ever care to experience, much less on that terrain.
Lost track of times
Went from Peak 4 to Peak 3 faster than expected
12:00 On East NE side of Peak 3 waiting for my turn down the slide from hell
Spent 4 hours negotiating the terrain on the East NE side of Peak 3
Left the low saddle between 3 & 2 about 4pm, headed straight down to the Amethyst Trail.
5:58 pm Back to TH
I look forward to tackling Peak 2 someday so I can say I've done all four. As for all four in one day, I can live in peace without that accomplishment. Besides, the only way it would happen is with Kenny, Brad & George's help and I seriously doubt they want to see my face in Four Peaks Wilderness again |
