| partners | | We started out in 51 degree temps but it felt bitter cold. With more layers than I've ever worn we headed up. This being my third attempt I knew the first half very well. Up to the saddle I let Bob decide on our route after explaining the options. He choose the direct route. Off we went. This proved to be an excellent choice!
Going up seemed to be much easier than anticipated. The views are nice but they can't touch what Malapais has to offer so I rated this hike a 4 as Malapais is a definite 5.
Heading down the tables turned. What seemed easy going up proved painful on the reverse. Bob showed me a shortcut I pray I never have to live through again. It was basically a torture chamber of bushwhacking. Luckily it was short lived and all worked out!
Near the arch I found in 2003 I spotted a more subtle arch too. Bob spotted a marker pointing to BCB 4806 on a saddle of sorts by a HUGE cairn. It seemed really out of place 0.85 direct air miles away. However I guess the saddle is the natural line of travel so it makes sense in that regards.
This is one hike I'm glad to have completed after two other failed attempts. On the same note, I do not want to go back any time soon. Coming down really zonked me out. Looking at TOPO! at home I think we should have explored over a little more. The unofficial high points "appear" fifty feet higher and possibly offer more stunning dropping views... to be continued (in like ten years)
The GPS Route for this hike introduces notes along the route. It should roll out soon, it's still under development.
The video isn't that great. Bob does have a nice agave throw.
