| partners | | This is a hike I've been wanting to complete for about 8 years. With several hikes up into the Geronimo Head area I knew it was a hardy task. It didn't disappoint. The views are amazing and the roller coaster route is relentless throughout.
We took a slightly different approach up to the gap going around the totem pole. This was not the best idea and slowed us down with some iffy terrain. Back on track we took the highroad in over the sheer cliff walls above LaBarge to see the dropping views. Then off to Geronimo Head followed by the curvy ridge to Malapais. The ascent is quite as easy as it looks on topo. Nevertheless our hearty group knocked it out via the wide NW ravine. The ridge may be doable but it has a pretty good sized cliff band 2/3rds up so we took ravine to be safe.
Great company with Berk, Matt & Bob! I'd highly recommend pants for this hike. Having nonot's Garmin HAZ Routes layer loaded into my GPS saved us some time on the return. Believe we were all very glad to lessen the roller coaster ride on the return!
