What could only be described as the true Seven Summits Challenge. We lucked out experiencing Autumn at it's finest with a sunrise glorifying the oak kingdom.
Our time chart:
6:13am Depart Trailhead (Lugged 260oz water [100oz Camelbak + 5 Quarts])
7:15am Brown's Saddle
7:40am Brown's Peak #1
8:26am 1-2 Saddle
8:55am Brown's Brother #2
11:02am 2-3 Saddle (Getting down was a mess & time consuming)
12:20pm Amethyst Sister #3 (All cairns from March gone)
1:14pm 3-4 Saddle
1:48pm Amethyst Peak #4 (ascended via NE, nice Autumn vegetation)
2:26pm 3-4 Saddle
3:10pm Amethyst Sister #3 (ascended via the best route I learned with the climbers in 03)
4:10pm 2-3 Saddle
5:35pm Brown's Brother #2
6:18pm 1-2 Saddle (put on the headlamps)
6:58pm Brown's Peak #1
7:50pm Brown's Saddle
8:56pm Finish
This was my first time going North to South. We cached water at Brown's Saddle and peaks 1-3. With a cool albeit sunny day I ended with just over a quart. Very happy as every other outing I came up short and miserable.
Not experienced descending south from #2 we wasted lots of time and energy. This killed the groups mojo. Best defined by Bob's comment on #3 "3 of 7 in six hours...". Not sure if my cheerleading was working as I forgot to pack a skirt. Then after another slow descent off 3 to the 3-4 saddle it was looking pretty bleak. Knowing #4 is more of a wooded maze than any risk factor I poured a little ether in the turbo intake. Everything went pretty good from there on. I figure the top dogs can pound this out in 9-10 hours or better. For myself I think 12 hours would be more enjoyable. Every trip is it's own adventure.
Thanks to everybody for all the training hikes to get me in shape for this one (Mazzie Peak, Malapais, Lemmon). I still can't get over how great I feel after this beast. Believe you'd shatter a hammer if you tapped my calves at this point. |
