I confess, I did not research this trail before, I just knew it was there. So I was very surprised at the hike. I was expecting to climb a mountain, instead I got to see its innards. With this hike, it is not about the trail, it's about the destination. The trail is "nhhhh". 10 feet wide, compact dirt, gullied in spots, but easy to avoid. The trail joins a wash about .5 miles. Wash had nice compact sand, easy to walk on. Approaching the innards of the mountain there are these looming monoliths on either side of the wash, reminding of the charred frames of a burnt structure. There is a small ladder that needs to be climbed to access the interior. Very cool! Rock features very unique. Explored the area, but didn't get too crazy climbing the rocks, though they did beckon to me. Had the mountain to myself, though there was one other car parked at the TH. No wildlife. Mainly scrub pinyon/juniper, though there were some good sized pines in the interior. Views were obscured due to the foliage, but I got some great peaks of Humphrey's and Slate(?) covered in snow and shrouded in clouds. |
