Still fighting off a bout of bronchitis but still wanting to get out for something smaller and easier, I headed to the Horrel Ranch and turned up 305, parking at the brushy Cuff Button TH. A bit of an up-and-down roller coaster initially on the old roadbed when it is there as parts have been washed out. About a mile in, I came across the first pools in the creekbed, however, cows were in the area, so I would not filter it. Got to Burro Spring, where there were more pools in the creek that were a bit better. As you get near the corral the trail on the south bank is still intact, although a bit brushy, but nothing horrible. Made it to the corral site that has been shrouded in a catclaw forest the past couple of years, and pushed on northward to the old water trough and Cuff Button Spring, which apparently is listed incorrectly on the map. Spent some time in the shade at the spring and headed back to the creek via the wash as it was less of a blood bath. I decided to continue for a bit and started the gradual hike up to the ridge, stopping at about the 4k elevation point (about halfway up the ridge) as my cough kicked in. The trail from the corral to my stopping point was in great condition. There is some minor scrub oak and baby manzanita growth, but nothing like it used to be. There are a couple of washouts to maneuver around, but nothing that you can't get around. Rehydrated and headed back to the TH. Uneventful hike back coming across a couple of cows about a mile out. Temps were in the upper 60s with a nice breeze most of the day. Time is running out for valley hiking, so get out there while you still can.

I had to get me some Cuff Button. FR 287A to Miles Ranch is in decent shape. The road is rough but easily passable for most vehicles. West Pinto trail is there until it isn't. We stayed on for a while but it disappears and you do the best you can. We didn't find the Cuff Button trail junction so we started out up Campaign trail and worked our way over to what's left of Cuff Button. Lots of catclaw and twists and turns to get you off track. We followed the trail for the most part but the conditions slowed us down. Peak 4576 was on the agenda and after that the decision to take a ridge down was made. The short cuts always work out. :scared: The ridge wasn't too bad but the drop to the trail was a bit steep. The last leg was through Wildcat Canyon. The start on the north end was cleared and easy to follow. When the trail was overgrown, the canyon floor was the easy choice. After the turn over the saddle the trail was gone and a beeline for the drop down point was made. From the drop down the trail was visible and the final mile to the ranch was easy going. Feeling complacent, lethargic and lost that zest for life? You need to get some Cuff Button. : rambo :
Disclaimer: Hiking can be dangerous. Proceed at your own risk. If you get injured on Cuff Button trail, best shake it off and keep moving. No one will be coming along to help.

After lurking on the HAZ website for over 15 years, I decided it was time to start contributing more than money. So here is my first triplog. I can hear a Chumley laughing in my head now as I write this. 😂

We decided to hit this trail up as an alternative to the Miles Ranch Trail head, which has gotten a lot of attention lately. We are always looking for places that haven’t been ruined by Instagram influencers and that have water and areas for the dogs to run and be dogs.

The road in wasn’t bad but need HC near the end. Some really nice colors just starting. Weather was perfect and I had counted on not seeing anyone and we didn’t.

Had a fly over when we were walking in the canyon and it was pretty cool. Creek started running about 0.4 mi below the spring and that was really great for the dogs. Went up wildcat canyon a ways past oak spring which had a puddle and a little further. Had the old guy Blazer with us and his max is 6 miles so we stopped under some yellow sycamore for lunch and turned around

Weather was perfect and it ended up being a really quiet low key day to be in the eastern superstitions. So happy to be back in this area.

Had a sick day to use or lose so used it and decided to head out east to the Cuff Button TH. The road is in 'decent' shape but a high clearance 4wd is definately still needed. Parked in the pokey stuff and headed down the Cuff Button trail. With the erosion from the Woodbury Fire the past couple years the old road is washed out or overgrown in several spots. Most of the time it's safer to stay in the creek bed. About halfway to the corral, I was taking a break in the canyon, when it started to rumble. A couple seconds later an F-16 went flying by at a good clip directly over the canyon about 500 feet above it. It was so freaking loud but dam it was awesome! Went by so fast I didn't have time to get my camera out. Made it up to the old Cuff Button Corral, spent some time relaxing under a good size pine and started back. Had a White Tailed Deer stomp and blow at me about a mile and a half down. She took off down the creek and kept blowing at me the entire time. lol. Then had another one do it about a quater mile from the truck, it's hunting season so maybe they are just pissed off? lol. Temps in the upper 40's at the start and upper 60's with a nice breeze when I finished up. This area of the Superstitions is so remote, so no surprise that I did not see anyone the entire day, just the way I like it.

Three star Supes summit for several reasons. The first is that it is one of the five highest in the wilderness and now I've completed them all, some of them multiple times. Not sure I'll repeat this one like Lee and Wally did though. : wink : It also has great views, but not quite as good as Mound Mountain. The creek section has rugged beauty, but not quite as nice as Campaign Creek, Fish Creek, Frog Tanks or Rogers Canyon (to name a few others). I ascended the official route to the summit, but decided to descend the SE ridgeline to the Cuff Button Trail. It was a last minute decision after enjoying some liquid courage in the wind with the bee flies and ladybugs. The alternate route seemed like less of an interior Chaparral bushwhack, but it turned out to be worse lower since the Cuff Button Trail is in horrible shape. Lots of ripping and tearing Wait-a-minute bushes. By comparison, the Campaign Trail to the Pinto Divide is actually not too shabby! I hadn't noticed Wally's triplog about descending the SE ridgeline until after getting home. It definitely is a more direct route. At least I hiked some of a trail I hadn't done before and Jerky Spring was also kind of neat. Most of the bypasses along the West Pinto section are essentially worthless since there is a bunch of deadfall and thick, fresh vegetation. You also miss many of the good creek sections on the silly cairned diversions. I thought following the creek bed on my ascent route was much more enjoyable hiking.

Wanted to get another hike in the Superstitions, so checked the weather last night looking at temps only getting up to 88 degrees, which is still warm for me, but figured I did it last Sunday so why not. Got up early and headed up 287 past the Haunted Canyon and Miles turn off's and turned onto the 305 by the old Horrell Ranch. No one else at the TH when I parked in the catclaw and started up the Cuff Button Trail. The Cuff Button Trail runs all the way to the Oak Flat area but with the temps today my goal was to visit the old corral. The old two track has washed away in many areas, especially in the beginning where I stayed in the creek bed (it was much sandier then I remember) however, a good portion of the trail still exists up on the benches next to the Creek. This trail sees very little use which has caused the catclaw to flourish in the area unfortunately. Took a couple breaks along the way up to the corral but eventually made it. Spent some time there paying the price with the catclaw forest surrounding it and headed back. The way back was hot AF! I thought last Sunday was warm, yeah no, it was a slow hike out today, stopping several times to hydrate and cool off as most of this hike is exposed in the sun. There was a slight breeze every so often that kind of helped but not really. Got back to the truck and the temp read 97 degrees, so much for only getting to 88! This area of the Superstitions has some of the coolest geology anywhere in the wilderness, but I am going to pause hiking in the Superstitions until the weather cools off, today was way over my comfort level.

Got up early and headed over to 287 and up 305 to the Cuff Button Trail. With the monsoon rain 305 is not for the faint of heart. The wash is filled with tons of boulders and tree branches, don't even attempt it without a high clearance 4wd unless you need a quick oil change. Cuff Button used to be an old road up to the wilderness boundary, however, the erosion from the fire has eaten away most of it. It was easier to boulder hop in the creek. The creek had a light flow all the way to the corral which is always nice. Got to the corral and I remembered why it's such a pain in the pumpkin to get there. This area has the highest concentration of catclaw in the Superstitions I've ever seen! Finally made it to the corral after a quick blood bath and had lunch. There are some ruins further up on the climb on the ridge I wanted to check out, however, I'm still feeling some effects of bronchitis and decided not to push my luck and headed back to the TH. It's pretty obvious that no one uses this section of Cuff Button as there were zero signs of anyone however, I did see tire tracks within a quarter mile of the coral. Some moron had to drive a Razor past the wilderness boundary. More kitty prints in the area then I have seen in awhile. Got to try out the truck body armor as a accidently took the wrong road (which was a catclaw forest) on the way out. Not a scratch on her. :app: Another trail in the eastern Superstitions that has been destroyed by erosion.

Drove out east yesterday (surprise, surprise) to the Horrell TH to hike Cuff Button. Had my son hiking with me for the first time in over a year and I wanted to show him the old corral. Stopped for a quick break there and decided to head up to the ridge to check out the views. Trail is in great shape from the TH to the corral with no burn, however, after the corral everything is burnt crisp. Slow going heading up with a bit of route finding needed. There was a light dusting of snow on top of the ridge and winds were blowing pretty good which made it pretty cold. Looking across Sawtooth Ridge had a bit of snow as well. Came back down off the ridge, had lunch and headed back out. My hiking season in the Superstition's does not have much time left before the heat comes, trying to get out as much as I can last couple of weeks.

Camped at Miles Ranch for the weekend, so I decided it would be a good time to check out Cuff Button trail, one of the few remaining trails in this area I haven't seen yet. Started with Wildcat Canyon, which I had done earlier in the year with a backpack. Think I did a little bit better with the routefinding on the first part.

Cuff Button was pleasant in the lower part of the canyon, while it was double track, but farther up it was choked out with catclaw, thistles, and other sharp things. Outside of the burned areas, progress was actually a little easier on Wildcat Canyon. I was pretty over it by the time we got back down to West Pinto.

West Pinto has quite a bit more catclaw than I remembered from six months ago. But at least there was shade!

I did all the "official" numbered hikes seen on the big wilderness map at some trailheads. Cuff Button Trail #276 was one of the last ones I did. I found it on a nice cool day in April 2020. I enjoyed the stream and breeze and scenery so much that I went back and did it again a month later in May...an unseasonably cool, pleasant day. Both times, I did not see a single person at the ranch, although there were clear signs of maintenance and ranching. And I did not see a single vehicle or person on the roads (305, 287) to the trail. Not one. Both trips. All day. Just cattle. It took some doing to find the trailhead. I parked at an aging, fading sign with a right pointing arrow and the title "Horrell Creek Trailhead" and a left pointing arrow for "Cuff Button Trail 276". (On the second trip, I walked a ways to the right to try to figure out what the "Horrell Creek Trailhead" might be about, and I came up empty.) The signs will fall down and fade out soon unless someone intervenes. I took a lot of pictures to make sure I can find it again with or without the signs. As far as other trails, the West Pinto trail is the one that really sliced me up and caused little detours. I hiked all these trails before the fire, from 2017-2020. I might do them again when I have time if I have the juice and legs left. This Cuff Button Trail 276 is a kind of odd favorite of mine, probably because of the solitude and the sense of accomplishment of finding it. Also, as mentioned, I did catch it on two exquisite days.

Wanted to take Brooks somewhere different, so we went to 3 Trailheads for a variety of Jeeping in the middle of nowhere. We first started at the Haunted Canyon TH then went over to Miles Ranch TH. Got to Miles and already a car there, we decided to take a short 4 mile hike out and back on West Pinto Trail 212, met the hikers from the car at the TH they went out to the Spencer Trl and returned. Got into the Woodbury Fire area, what a shame, but the under growth is starting back. Creek was running good, but a lot of dirt and sand has been washed down by the rains. Then we went over to find Cuff Button TH ( that was fun, never been there ), road was ok up to the Horrell Ranch, but after that we turned on 305, it was a jeep lovers delight, nothing hard but rocky and slow didn't need a 4x4 but needed high clearance in some areas. Made it to Cuff Button and turned around to make the slow ride out of there. The route I attached is only from the old Iron Bridge to the various Trailheads and return to the bridge. Had a great day in the woods

Headed out to the Horrell TH to hike out to the Cuff Button corral. A pretty chilly 31 degrees to start the morning. Most of this area was spared from the fire, however, the creek is a bit washed out in places from flooding but nothing horrible, the trail is still pretty easy to follow. Water was everywhere flowing down the creek. This hike is still as beautiful as I remember with some awesome multiple color rock faces. Had a quick lunch near the corral and then took a catclaw trek to get to the corral. Fields and fields of it everywhere which left it's mark. I was out here last April and while there was a lot of it you could still walk around the corral. Not anymore! The fire finally showed it's ugly head about 200 yards from the corral and burned back all the way up and over Pinto Peak. A nice 7 mile stroll in a remote and pretty unknown part of the Superstitions.

With obligations in the valley until noon, we were not working with a lot of time today, but we were still able to get out to an old favorite area.

The road out to the Cuff Button Trailhead seems to be about in the same condition (high clearance, 4wd). It’s 6.1 miles to the Cuff Button Trailhead from the iron bridge. I think that actually makes it closer than Miles Trailhead, which I find surprising.

The road portion of Cuff Button is getting a little over grown with acacia, especially, as you near the corral. The corral missed being burned up by about 200 feet. The Woodbury Fire burnt the ridgeline across the wash from the canal. Not to far after the corral you come to the perimeter of the Woodbury Fire. The entire area is scorched. Big views now, but no living trees. It goes from a riparian canyon to completely devoid of green vegetation. The trail however, is clear of brush and in pretty good shape though. We walked a little into the burn area and then turned around, as it was already past four at that point.

I think Cuff Button may have been the first description I ever wrote for HAZ. It was real nice being in the area again. I posted the route for the drive in from the iron bridge. Its the six mile route that says driving directions in the notes.

Driving to the trailhead this morning two guys in a Forester pulled up next to me then back off and pulled up again. I knew it was trouble. So I followed Bruce and Joe for a while and watched Bruce play bumper tag with a white pickup truck that came from Florence Junction. The entertainment started early but I pulled off at Pinto Valley mine and they continued on. The road down to Miles Ranch is a little rough but nothing you can't get by with high clearance. There were several pickups parked along the way which told me hunting season is on. I still didn't see another person out on the trails. I did see 1 white-tailed buck and 6 does along the way. Only one doe stopped for a photo. The trails are washed out, burnt, overgrown, rocky, down right ugly and I love it. I took a few detours to revisit ruins which are easier to access and more visible since the burn but due to size or positioning still tough to get good photos of. I didn't have my track for Wildcat Canyon (it's on my other GPS) so I knew I might lose the trail. I hiked up a ridge and found where I should have turned but decide to continue around peak 4597. The miles were the same but that added another 500 AEG. It was a nice day out but the off-trail and side trips on this one tired me out.

I hiked part of Cuff Button this past Friday before I ran out of time and had to turn around. Decided last minute to hike the 12 mile West Pinto > Cuff Button > Wildcat Canyon Loop yesterday. Arrived at Miles TH at 7:30 am where several other groups including a Boy Scout troop were camping at the ranch.

West Pinto - Pretty easy roller coaster of a trail with several small up's and down's with several creek crossings. Nothing to difficult and it was relatively brush free all the way to Oak Flat.

Cuff Button - 1,000 foot climb the first mile and a half, all exposed in the sun, was definitely a warm climb up. A little after two miles in you reach the saddle/ridge line and from there all the way to the corral it is a catclaw/holly bushwhack. You never really lose the trail, however the only way to keep going is to go through it. From the corral to the junction of Wildcat Canyon it is better; still overgrown but you can navigate in the creek to get around most parts.

Wildcat Canyon - Not sure what to say about this trail. From the junction to Oak Spring it's in pretty decent shape. At Oak Spring you start a small climb on the side of the creek getting around the waterfall, which is currently dry. Definitely overgrown in this area; bushwhacked our way up and down to the creek bed. The next half mile is in the creek bed which is pretty easy. Now for the fun part. After about a half mile in the creek we started our way up the small ridge in Wildcat Canyon. Complete catclaw bushwhack for the remaining 1.3 miles up and back down the ridge to Miles TH. It took us nearly an hour and a half for this portion. There are numerous game trails in all directions and we lost the trail countless times having to bushwhack our way back the way we just came trying to find it again.

I expected an 8-9 hour day and it ended being close to an 11 with all of the bushwhacking and breaks. I did bring some tree clippers which were a huge help as I was able to do a bit of trail maintenance but parts of Cuff Button and a third of Wildcat need MAJOR maintenance, I would say the last 1.3 miles back to Miles TH are nearly impassable with all of the catclaw currently. This was probably one of the most brutal hike's I've done in recently memory in terms of the amount of bushwhack. It was a complete blood batch as my arms and legs look like I lost a fight with a pair of scissors. :(

Reading the triplogs from late last year it seemed Cuff Button was pretty clear so I made the trip out to the Horrel TH. The first couple miles (until the Wildcat Canyon junction) are pretty good but after that it is catclaw hell and unfortunately I was not smart enough to wear long pants. Made it to the corral, ate lunch and decided I had had enough of the blood bath and headed back to the TH. The wet winter must have caused the catclaw to multiply 10 fold. Definitely needs some maintenance before I attempt it again.

1st trip
I've done haunted canyon a few times and stayed at Tony's place but never really went anywhere else in the Eastern Supes before. This was a great intro to some new territory. I began the trip at the old ranch and headed on West Pinto trail. It was a very beautiful beginning, but once you get out of the meadow, the trees start closing in and visibility is next to zero. The trail mostly stays near or in the creek bed for this first few miles. Cuff Button (which for some reason I have always read as Cliff Burton) is a completely different experience. It starts climbing right away and starts heading up a ridgeline as it crests around the drainage below. This trail is very exposed with little to no shade the whole time. I came across several rocky spots that looked like could have been walls or rooms. There were also some very cool caves and rock outcroppings that looked like could have some ruins. The trail then descends back down to an area heavily used by cows and turns into more of a road until the turn off for Wildcat Canyon. Wildcat started off great and then I got off trail a bit and that catclaw ate me alive. Decided to just stay in a ravine as much as I could to avoid it and keep a straight path. Got back just before sunset and some chilly temps with it. Did not see another soul all day. Will definitely have to come back out for some more exploring out here.

1st trip
Wildcat Canyon has been on my radar for quite some time. The Miles Trailhead is just a tad over 100 miles from my house, so I like to make it worth the trip and find some other new areas to hit while out there. The decommissioned Pinto Peak #213 fit the bill for a loop. FOTG had already done this loop a few times so I didn't even need to draw up a track.

A 7:15a 40ish degree start started us past the ranch building and a guy curled up next to a fire.

Wildcat Canyon Trail
To the first saddle, the trail is pretty straight forward. From this saddle, down to the wash area has a few areas that are thin and prickly, but quite doable. In the canyon travel is easy. we missed one of the bypasses that horse travel took, leaving the creek, when we dealt with getting around an exploring bovine. Staying in the creek bed was NP.

On the Cuff Button #276 for 2.5 miles is mainly old FR 305.

Decommissioned Pinto Peak Trail #213 follows a 2 track to the Wilderness boundary. It's an easy walk through some interesting territory. The Mormon Corral had all sorts of water. There were 3 full troughs and a 200-300 gallon metal tank that was 2/3rds full. After the Wilderness boundary, the trail gets thinner in some spots, but does come back if you have the GPS track. As FOTG mentioned the only catclaw section, is in the last 1/2 mile or so before reaching Campaign.

The Campaign Trail #256 is cleared and 6' wide in spots all the way south to the Fireline trail. After here, there is less than a mile section that needs some love. The rest of the trail down to West Pinto, is decent with some nice views, We even saw some poppies.

On the roller coaster of the West Pinto #212, just 2.5 miles back to the TH.

Weather was just about perfect on this one.

This started to be an out and back but once I was half way along the loop it was better to continue on to Wildcat Canyon for the return. The Cuff Button trail is in good shape. There are new trail signs and there is a visible trail all the way to the Burro Spring turn off. Wildcat Canyon was decent but I lost the trail on the final climb out of the Canyon. I knew the direction so I just hiked until I picked up the trail again. There were no other hikers, some mandatory off trail (of course) and a band of coati encountered in Wildcat Canyon. The temperature was nice and didn't warm up too bad by my exit time of 1 pm.
