Yesterday I watched it rain and snow all day in Wilderness of Rocks. So I decided to head up the mountain today to see what I could see.

Indeed there was lots of snow above General Hitchcock on north slopes, and sporadic light powder elsewhere too. Not deep, but enough to give a little wintry vibe to everything.

Summerhaven looked like a little Christmas town, just with tourists instead of elves. Sitting on the balcony at the lodge sipping hot chocolate sounded like a nice thing to do, but I had business to attend to.

There weren’t a lot of cars at Marshall Gulch so I got a spot near the trailhead. It was a little chilly in the late morning but not too bad. I set a good pace to start and that warmed me up quick.

Marshall Gulch was gorgeous as always, and lightly trafficked as almost always not. Decent flow in the creek, too, considering how lame our winter has been.

There were lots of tracks in the snow at Marshall Saddle and down into Wilderness of Rocks. Enough to make me wonder if the snow was older than yesterday, which it wasn’t.

Soon I stepped off to allow a couple lady backpackers pass. I asked if they had stayed the night and they said yes. I asked if they had fun, knowing it either rained or snowed on them, and sadly they said no, and they were bailing a day early. Clearly we had different definitions of fun.

Shortly after that I stepped off the trail to let a long line of very polite teenagers pass, with two adult chaperones in tow. This group could have accounted for some of the heavy tracks at the saddle.

Near the junction with Lemmon Lookout I passed a thru-hiker from abroad, presumably somewhere in Europe, scarfing a miniature pie for lunch. He said it had rained on him the previous night but it wasn’t bad. After I had moved on I thought about the extended forecast which has Tucson pushing 100 by Thursday… this fellow would likely be crossing the desert north of Oracle by then and that stretch would be brutal. Hope he fares well.

At the pine flat before the trail made its final crossing of Lemmon Creek, I saw about a dozen tents. Biggest group I’d ever seen there, though I only saw two campers.

I split off trail to make for the pools, and made a new for me route. Seems I never take the same route twice.

As I neared the pools I heard voices, and at first thought the pools might be occupied by a large group. Had I arrived a few minutes earlier it would have been, but said group was climbing out. It was about a dozen ladies, who said they were indeed the occupants of the epic camp at the pine flat. They indicated I’d have the pools to myself.

I did indeed. I stayed over an hour and cooked a hot lunch. I forgot a spoon though so I used my tiny Swiss Army knife to whittle a stick, and it worked pretty well.

On the hike out I didn’t really see anybody, just another thru-hiker. All the snow had already melted. As I approached the saddle there were a few snow flurries… so slight I wondered if trees have dandruff.

As I descended into Marshall Gulch the snow picked up into a more legit flurry, enough that it accumulated a bit on my shirt. It was pretty fun, it’s not often I get to hike when it’s snowing.

It didn’t last long. Before the Wilderness sign it was already sunny.

The snow in Summerhaven was gone, too.

I’m glad I took the trouble to do this hike today, it’s probably the last time I’ll get to enjoy a cool hike with a little snow for quite a while.

Third trip to Lemmon Pools this summer, this time I took Keith who’d never been.

It was also my first time to “The” pool. You know, the Big One. All my previous trips were to smaller pools upstream, often involving dicey scrambles.

It had rained a lot the past week, so the creek was flowing very well and the pool was large and inviting.

We reached the pool at 10:30, and another fellow was fixing to leave when we arrived. Keith and I had the place to ourselves for the better part of an hour, and cooled off in the refreshing water. It took a little fortitude but I managed to swim to the waterfall. The pool was deep enough that I couldn’t touch bottom, though I didn’t put my head under.

A couple hikers showed up as we were fixing to leave a little past noon.

On the hike out, clouds were building over the east side of the Catalinas. No rain for us, but nice cloud cover and cool breezes made the climb to Marshall Saddle much nicer than it could have been. We passed a couple backpackers heading down; turns out they recognized me as they live on my street! They were headed to spend two nights at the pools, which they’d done countless times over the past 40 years.

Back at the car in Marshall Gulch, it started to rain literally as we shut the doors. We stopped at the General Store and Sky Island Traders in Summerhaven, then headed home as the rain picked up in earnest.

Later in the afternoon I looked up at WoR from my kitchen window and saw it inundated with rain. I was a bit envious of my neighbors!

It is that time of year again to head up to where it is cool. This time Mount Lemmon to Lemmon Pools. Never get tired of this hike and I have been doing it now for over 60 years. The little sapling in the upper pools is now a full grown tree and the rocks around the pools and falls have shown a little wear. There was a first for me this time, the main pool was filled with sand so that you could walk across in just ankle deep water. The pool near the falls was still deep. With the lame monsoon the creek probably didn't flash this year to clean it out. The water was cool but not cold. I would say Lemmon creek had a light flow.

The trail after Marshall Saddle is not quite as worn in as it usually is and in spots a bit vague but still easy to follow, especially if you know where the trail is suppose to go. No one on the trail after Marshall Saddle until we were heading out, one person. Took the lower Aspen Trail back to our start point. The Aspen Trail definitely doesn't get the use that it use to before the fire but still in good condition. Steep going down, would highly recommend doing this loop in the CCW direction where the climb up Marshall Gulch is a little more gradual. Great hike for a summer day

Drove up the mountain for the day with Wifey. Marshall Gulch was a zoo, which was predictable on a summer Saturday. Wifey wasn’t up to a long hike so she stopped about a half mile from the trailhead, set up her hammock, and settled in to a pleasant stretch of napping and reading. I, on the other hand, felt the need to stretch my legs. We’ve been traveling a lot and didn’t have much time for hiking, so I was anxious to get back in the groove.

I found myself headed down WoR, not sure how far I’d go before turning round. We had dinner company so we needed to head down the mountain by 3pm.

I made it to the last crossing of Lemmon Creek about when I had to quit and turn back. I decided to press my time a little, and headed down to the pools to explore a little. I found some nice ones, big enough for a refreshing dip. I had lunch there, too, and filtered water. I only had a half hour though, so I’m resolved to return when we don’t have dinner company.

I felt a few sprinkles on the way back, but nothing stormy. The clouds and breeze kept it mostly tolerable; the sun was beastly.

I connected with wifey back at Marshall Gulch and we hiked out together. It was a delightful day!

Wifey and I hiked down to Lemmon Pools. It was a beautiful Saturday so there were several other parties we encountered with the same goal in mind.

Sadly wifey struggled with stomach pain the whole trip, so we took lots of breaks. She was determined to complete the trip. We got there and back but it was slow going.

Lemmon Creek was flowing nicely and there were lots of falls and pools.

We resolved to return when her GI wasn’t flared up and possibly make an overnight out of it.

I got a call from my daughter and she wanted to go on a hike, we decided a hike to Lemmon Creek would be good. The weather would be nice up there. Turned out all my kids (not kids anymore) and my grandson went on the hike with Ginny and I. Got started at the Marshal Gulch trail head about 0900. Good amount of people at the trail head (as expected for a Saturday) and had to park about 100 yards from the trail head. Fairly few hikers after Marshall Saddle which is about 1.5 miles in. Light flow in Lemmon Creek maybe a gallon per minute. Pools at Lemmon creek were full and not stagnant. We took our lunch at what we call flying saucer rock (large rock sticking up just south of the trail before the trail crosses the creek for the last time). This was our usual camp site from as far back as 1960 when my father took us up there. A lot has changed over the years in the wilderness of rocks area but still a magnificent area. The trail is in good condition but if you are not familiar with it there were a couple of creek crossing that may have you stumped for a while. If you get to one of these crossings and you don’t seem to be on a well traveled trail go back and find where it crosses the creek, The fire from a few years back has made some of these crossing a bit obscured.

I was a bit concerned about doing this hike just 12 weeks after my surgery, wasn't sure how I would handle the AEG and rocky trail, but I did fine and felt good. The valve surgery hasn't caused any issues but the other parts of the body seem to be rebelling (Legs, back and stomach). Those parts are just going to have to get with the program. Looks like I might be up to some more challenging trails as soon as the weather cools off.

Was looking for something really mellow with water, since I'm taking it easy ahead of next weekend's adventure. I had been wanting to check out Lemmon Pools for some time, so decided to give this a go. Opted on a Mint Springs start so as to minimize elevation gain along the way.

Got to a spot where there was flagging leading south from WoR trail, so I figured this must be the official unofficial route to the pools... Unfortunately this only lasted like 50 feet. I had seen a few gps routes before, but was mostly just operating on memory and topo map, so we were really just kinda scrambling through the rock playground until we found a way down to the creek.

The first spot we got to was a cool narrow section, but it dropped dramatically downstream from there, so we left the creek and made our way to a side canyon that drained into Lemmon Creek farther downstream. Here was some more really cool stuff, but not what I believed to be "the pools". Went downstream to where it really started to drop, and made our way back upstream until we found a nice shaded pool (still not "the pool") and relaxed there for half an hour or so.

Took a more direct route on the way out, with some light scrambling.

I think we overshot "the" Lemmon Pools, but the areas we saw were a lot of fun nonetheless.

We headed back to the Tucson area for the second time in three weeks, seeking some cooler weather in the higher elevation. I'd hiked various trails on Mt. Lemmon a few times before, but our destination today was Lemmon Pools, a new spot for me...I just hoped that there had been enough rain recently that the pools would have some water.

It had been more than two years since I last hiked at Mt. Lemmon, and the long drive up the mountain was more scenic than I remembered, with the landscape transitioning from desert/cacti to pine trees with the elevation gain. We started from Marshall Gulch Trailhead, which was predictably full, but there was still plenty of parking in the two smaller lots near the trailhead at ~8AM.

There was a little water and some pools in the small creek crossings along Marshall Gulch Trail, which was a positive sign, and we passed a few rain gauges with water in them near the burned area along Marshall Gulch. We connected with Wilderness of Rocks Trail and saw more water and pools as we continued west until we left the trail to make our way to Lemmon Pools. There was a fairly well-worn unofficial trail among the boulders that led to an easy scramble down to the pools. I heard trickling water as we made our way down and was happy to see that the pool had plenty of water, though it was dark enough that we couldn't tell how deep it was. There was a small waterfall flowing from the upper pools into the lowest pool, and though I'm sure the flow is much more impressive in wetter years, I was just happy to see any water flowing at all.

[ youtube video ]

It's a really enjoyable area, with plenty of shade and flat rocks for sitting under the trees. We were lucky enough to have it to ourselves, but only for a few minutes before the crowds started showing up. Four trail runners came down and started jumping off the rocks into the pool, confirming that it was deep enough to safely jump in, and they eventually climbed around to the upper pools. As a second and third group showed up, we decided to skip going in the water and continue the hike...and a fourth group was headed in as we made our way back out. At least we had a few minutes of quiet there...

Before we got back on on the official trail, we stopped at an overlook just above Lemmon Pools, which offered great views looking south over the Wilderness of Rocks and the more distant peaks. The views along the western half of Wilderness of Rocks Trail are especially nice, with a lot of balancing rocks and unique geology. We made the intersection with Mt. Lemmon Trail our turnaround point and headed back toward Marshall Gulch as some afternoon thunderheads started to build. On the hike out, we followed Aspen Trail to see some new terrain, and the clouds were starting to get a little more serious as we finished.

The temperature climbed steadily as we drove back down Mt. Lemmon, starting in the 80s and reaching 108° in Tucson. It ended up being a beautiful and exciting drive back to Phoenix. Soon after a second dust storm alert came through, we could see the dust cloud approaching I-10 from the east, but we were far enough north that it stayed behind us. At the same time, we had a beautiful sunset to the northwest, and rain and lightning to the northeast as thunderstorms approached Phoenix. Lots of great clouds, plus a dust storm, the sunset, and thunderstorms happening at the same time on different parts of the horizon...an exciting end to a fun day on Mt. Lemmon.

1st trip

With the valley temps finally breaking 100 I thought it was time to choose a hike that started at elevation. Decided that I wanted to go check out Lemmon Pools, but wanted a little more AEG than that hike offered. Original plan was to do a CCW loop of Aspen :next: Meadow :next: Lemmon Rock :next: W.O.R but the Bighorn closures got in the way of that plan!
After following two Trico Electric cherry pickers up the mountain at an infuriating 28 MPH I finally made it to Marshall Gulch around 7am. Shouldered my pack and hit the trail. First time I’ve started at elevation in a long time and could really feel the altitude.

Marshall Gulch was beautiful with good stream flow and lots of green and critters. Best of all there were absolutely no people to disturb the sounds of nature.

After reaching the saddle I started up Aspen. The lower section is more or less as I remember, but the upper section after gaining the ridge top is a wasteland -- the entire south side of the ridge has been destroyed. Construction of the fire line obliterated the switchbacks at the top so it took a bit of extra effort to find and follow them. Exposure was 100% so this is one I wouldn’t want to be doing in the heat of the afternoon.

Walked the roads up top and made my way through Lemmon Park. Stopped there for breakfast and took a few moments to admire the views. Continued on and really enjoyed the narrow stretch of forest in the latter part of the Meadow Trail which hasn’t burned. Sadly it seems like most Catalina hikes are going to be to visit narrow sections of unburned forest surrounded by scorched earth.

Took a left on the Mt Lemmon Trail (road) and headed toward the turnoff for the lookout. Passed Quartzite Spring and was surprised to find it bone dry. There was a little seep from the rock above the pump house, but nothing out of the pipe and no sign of recent flow.

Reached the Lemmon Rock trailhead and came to a closed and locked gate just past the wilderness sign. This is one of the new steel gates that I’ve seen popping up at a number of the Catalina trailheads. No posting of why the gate was locked. I figured that Lemmon Rock would be like the other trails where there was no field indication of the closure, but in this case it would appear that the Forest Service really doesn’t want people on the trail. What’s funny is that the fence extends about 10ft to either side of the gate and then stops so it’s not like the gate is a real obstacle. Plus that detour would put me off-trail which wouldn’t be in violation of anything! Decided not to tempt fate and headed back to and down the Aspen trail.

Once in the W.O.R. my spirits lifted and I enjoyed making my way down into the valley. Fire damage is intermittent with most of the forest in the upper section looking OK, but I swear there are more trees dead or close to dead than there were when I was through here last in November. About halfway between the first creek crossing (where the trail heads south) and the intersection of the Lemmon Rock trail I started seeing some water in the creek. 4 or 5 of the crossings had some water flowing.

Below the Lemmon Rock trail things started looking more and more singed, then outright burnt. This made the trail even more exposed than it had been and it was starting to get warm out there. The ponderosa stands near the last crossing were more or less intact, but a lot of the smaller brush and ground cover was taken out by the fire.

Having never been to the pools I downloaded a GPS track and that would have been great if it weren’t for the fact that my app had a brain fart and all I ended up with was a waypoint. Knowing that the approach was well before the stream crossing I looked for an obvious trail, but couldn’t find anything. There was a cairn on the trail but I couldn’t see an obvious way through the brush. I went a little farther on and then over some rocks into the area above the upper pools. Found a couple of makeshift campsites and eventually found the trail. Checked out the campsite above the main pool then made my way down.

There was a small amount of water over the falls but the flow was slow enough that the pool was starting to look a bit stale. Was going to take a dip, but realized that I forgot to put sunblock in my pack. Knowing the exposure I was facing on the way out I decided to forego the dip in favor of not being rendered extra crispy on the hike out. Next time I’ll be sure to pack sunblock and a pool floaty!

Did some extra scrambling on the way out and then followed what I could find of the use trail back to the main trail. Ended up pushing through the brush right next to the cairn that I passed earlier.

The hike out was a total slog. The temperatures were in the 90s at this point and shade was almost nonexistent until well after the Lemmon Rock intersection. Add in a constant swarm of gnats around my head and I was loving life. Conditions were better above 7500’ but I was beat and really dragging. Fortunately, the last 1.5 miles or so were all downhill!

On the drive out I stopped by Bear Wallow to check on water availability for a backpack I’m planning. Totally dry.

Another evening hike to avoid the COVID crowds. Still a few folks at the pools, though. It was fun jumping in from up high.

Did a Friday evening-Saturday morning backpack with J&C. Nice to get up in the Pines. We hung out at Balanced Rock for dinner and sunset. Saw the StarLink trail of Satellites. Freaking crazy.

As I discovered on the Potato Patch Loop [ photoset ] , in the Hualapai Mountains, two weeks ago, is that I am out of elevation gain shape. Too many flat hikes spinkled between my neighborhood walks. And Mount Lemmon’s trails are all about elevation gain (AEG). ⛰

After digging around, I hit upon the idea of an out-and-back hike on Marshall Gulch Trail #3 and Wilderness of Rocks Trail #44 to the Upper Lemmon Canyon Pools. There would be decent mountain temps, shade, enough AEG to stretch my current limit, and a nice payoff at the end. (Actually, midway.)

There’s not much parking at the Marshall Gulch trailhead, and when my wife & I arrived at 9:00 a.m. it was already full. (On a Friday!)

As I was waiting for my crappy Garmin 62S to find satellites, another hiker remarked that there were no flies in the pit toilet. I responded, “Because the stench killed them.” 😁

It quite lush lower down on Marshall Gulch Trail #3. Higher up, it starts catching a little more sun, as burnt areas higher up on Mount Lemmon expose the trail as it meanders through fern patches and infant pine trees.

At Marshall Saddle, there is a 5-way trail intersection, but there were enough signs, it was obvious which way to go. (I saw quite a few older folks hiking the Aspen Trail #93 loop.)

Despite being a hair shallower than Marshall Gulch Trail #3, Wilderness of Rocks Trail #44 felt steeper. Besides the huge boulder formations which give the wilderness its name, the surrounding terrain was piney & more open, low to the ground. There were a number of good sitting logs that came in handy on the return trip. 🌲

I thought about scrambling up several formations in Lemmon Canyon, but decided I needed the energy to actually climb back out.

¾ of a mile below the intersection of Lemmon Rock Trail #12, II found a decent size pool that was at least four feet deep, being fed by a very loud pour. There was a reclined scoop on the edge of the pool that I could sit in while dangling my feet in the water. I would have taken a nap there, except lack of overhead cover was frying me quick like. It's a great spot!

After a half hour of relaxation at the pool, I slowly hiked my way back up Lemmon Canyon. Grey clouds were rolling in, but it didn’t start sprinkling until just before I reached Marshall Saddle. Wanting to avoid a possible deluge, I booked it 1.5 miles back to the trailhead in only 37 minutes! 🏎

About a dozen species scattered up & down both trails, though primarily Marshall Gulch Trail #3. New Mexico Thistle most common. One large patch of Yellow Columbine in Marshall Gulch.

Can't really assess how full "full" is, but the one I stopped at was a good four feet deep with quite loud flow. Check out the video, above.

I was looking for a cooler place to hike than the VOS, and decided that Mount Lemmon was a good choice.

We did this loop CCW, and the climb back up to Mount Lemmon on the Lemmon Rock LO Trail was a butt-kicker.

On the way down from Mount Lemmon, while on Mount Lemmon Trail #5 we went past the WOR Trail for about .2 mile to a really cool view point -- it is well worth checking out. On the way to the view point we came across a green mohave rattlerblack-tailed rattlesnake alongside the trail. This snake was not very happy to see us.

We made a side trip to Lemmon Pool -- the water was clear but it was down 10-12 inches from being full, and the waterfall was not running.

I had never been to the Marshall Gulch TH, and had never hiked on the Aspen, Marshall, or Mint Springs Trail, so I decided to rectify that situation. I talked Tracie into heading down to Mount Lemmon with me.

We started and ended the hike at the Marshall Gulch TH. Note that Google Maps refers to this as the "Marshall Gulch Picnic Area".

This hike was a figure-8 loop with a sidetrip to Lemmon Pool.

We began the hike by taking the Aspen Trail to Marshall Saddle; from there we took the Mint Springs Trail to the Mint Springs TH; then we walked a very short distance on Carter Canyon Rd and then hiked on County Road 18 up to the ski lift and the Pusch Ridge Wilderness high point. Then we continued east to Mount Lemmon Trail #5 and took it to the Lemmon Rock LO Trail, which we took down to the Wilderness of Rocks Trail. Once at the Wilderness of Rocks Trail we went west for a half mile or so and then went off-trail to Lemmon Pool. Then we went back to the Lemmon Rock LO Trail-WOR trail junction, and took the WOR trail to Marshall Saddle. From there, we took the Marshall Gulch Trail back to the TH.

I got the idea for this hike from a hike that Joe and the_Eagle recently did in which they utilized the Mint Springs Trail and CR-18.

The trails were nice on the hike -- I particularly enjoyed the Aspen Trail, the Marshall Gulch Trail, and the Mint Springs Trail. There were lots of ferns, butterflies, and wildflowers on the Aspen and Mint Springs trails, and the Marshall Gulch trail had some water running in the creek.

Lemmon Pool had a decent amount of water, but it will benefit from being refreshed by some monsoon rains.

A day spent at the pools with CJ and the pups. We took a lot of naps, swam and read while at the pools and waited out the warmer part of the day to hike the pups out. Met a ranger who let me know she did not like dogs on the way in, that was fun. Steady traffic on the trail on the way out. Several water sources along the Wilderness of Rocks Trail.

This is a fun little area and was a perfect hike and hangout to get some quality time with the pups after an April full of dog watchers and the Grand Canyon.

Perfect temps and a pleasant hike on the way to the pools in the morning. We did run into one couple at the swim hole, but they left shortly after and we had the place to ourselves all day. We swam, enjoyed a couple of adult beverages and chilled at the little oasis for several hours (I have the sun burn to prove it). Lemon, like everywhere else in the state could use some rain. However, there was no shortage of water along the Wilderness of Rocks Trail and along Marshall Gulch to the Sunset, which was perfect for the pups on the hike out, as it was a little warm at times in the direct sunlight. I think this could be a fun area after a little rain.
