It's been a long time since I've hiked in this area. The last time was at least 10 years ago and it was going up to Tom's Thumb via Gateway Loop Trail. When Chris told me he was thinking of doing a loop in the area, I thought it would be nice to visit these trails again.

The plan was to start up the Gateway/Windgate Trail and then cross-over to the Bell Pass Trail and complete the loop. We arrived about 6am and the gate for the trailhead was closed and we found ourselves in a long line of vehicles waiting to get in. We didn't wait long and the gate opened up. I guess we weren't the only ones with a plan to start early.

I have done so many remote trails lately (with the exception of the Flatiron last month), it felt kinda odd starting off on a hike with a 100 or so of my fellow humans along for the hike. As we started up, there was some space between groups, but Chris and I are hardly "speed hikers" and groups younger and healthier folks passed us by.

When we got to the Gateway Pass turn off, the crowds thinned out. I have never been on this section of the trail and the rest of the hike was new to me with the exception of the bits of the Gateway Trail we used to return. Gateway Pass was nice, but once we turned on to the Bell Pass Trail, that was the nicest part of the hike for sure. The gloomy, cloudy skies opened up a little and the sun shined through every once in a while. The higher up we went, the nicer the scenery. We came across groups of hikers going up and a couple going down.

Once on the saddle and starting down, the landscape changes. The saguaros, cholla, ocotillo and palo verde disappeared and it was mostly grassy hillsides. The views on the way down were nice though. Fountain Hills, Four Peak, the Superstitions were all visible, albeit obscured by the hazy conditions. We encountered a group of mountain bikers and a large pack of kids in a youth group in the area. Once we made the turn to head up to Windgate Pass the number of hikers diminished.

Getting up to Windgate Pass was a more up/down path than I was expecting. Bell Pass was all up. And, once we made it to the saddle, the trail hugged the hillside and also had a little up and down. The scenery on the west slope improved as well. More saguaro and blooming ocotillo. Nice view of the mansions in the area too. Someone has a lot of money for sure.

When we made it to the Gateway Trail, Chris suggested we take the Desert Park Trail back to the trailhead. This trail was mostly flat and zip-zagged a wash in between a golf course and houses. Not the most scenic trail, but it nicer on my feet and hip than the Gateway Trail for sure.

A good day in the McDowells/MSP area. I am still a Superstition snob and will stick with what I know, but it was nice to explore a new area and it's always good to hike with Chris. Thanks for the invite!

Stayed local this weekend so I picked the Windgate-Bell Loop for a decent workout hike that I haven't done in 8 or 9 years. Andy was looking for somewhere to hike and this fit the bill for him, too.

I did a variation to try a figure 8 of the loop to add some mileage and AEG by incorporating the Gateway Loop Trail. We started up Windgate Pass, took Gateway over to Bell Pass, looped over both passes CCW then decided to cop out and take the Desert Park Trail rather than complete the figure 8. That bottom part of Windgate Pass gets a bit too steep and rocky after 9 miles.

Desert Park is still rocky, but mostly level and almost zero traffic. It's only a half mile longer than taking Windgate Pass back to the trailhead, but it's easier on the feet and legs.

Very cloudy, hazy, and even a bit gloomy at the start. I had zero complaints about this as it kept the temperature almost chilly, which was perfect for the slog up Bell Pass. The last part of Bell Pass was still in the shade, which helped even more. By the time we were over Bell Pass the sun was out, which made mildly better lighting for pictures, but not much. On the west side of the slope coming down Bell Pass, there's what looks like a mining road in the McDowell Mtn park area. I'm pretty sure it's not a trail. I tried to find on a satellite view but was having trouble. Possible future scouting hike.

Bell Pass Trail has a "Steeper/Less Steep" split that I don't remember seeing last time. We took the steeper section, which gave me Mt. Ord flashbacks.

Heavy traffic at the start with the hordes arriving and waiting for Scottsdale to open the gates, then it thinned out the further we got in. Saw a big group of 20+ people with a group of kids, then a few on Windgate Pass on the way back. One biker on Desert Park and that was it.

Was sick for a week. Had to cancel plans last weekend and then again on Monday 😕 Yesterday was the first day I was feeling better. Ok, time to test myself.

A friend wanted to go up Thompson from Gateway but I doubted I was ready for that. Instead I joined this outing. Low and behold, the hike leader was in the same situation. Had done this outing previously 4 years ago. Did it the opposite direction this time.

While not 💯, was still one of the fastest in the group. Great bounce back outing. As it turns out, my friend was also recovering from being sick and had to cut the more extreme outing short.

Did this loop a few years back and decided to take the wife this go around. Surprisingly sparse crowds at the TH this time of year, when we arrived around 7:30 am. Once out of the initial TH area, we enjoyed quite a bit of solitude all the way up to Tom's Thumb, and then again, once we began heading down East End trail.

Instead of cutting back through Windgate Pass for the lasso loop, we continued on to Bell Pass instead.

Best part of the loop, IMO, is the last couple of miles climbing up to Tom's Thumb from the West side. The first and final couple of miles near the TH are kind of blase.

I really wish they would put in more trails to the peaks/summits in the McDowells, as well as a west side approach to Thompson peak so you could do it as a loop.

For some reason, when hiking out here, I feel like the place is managed by star-bellied sneetches.

With the temps finally getting decent, I did my first hike in the valley since April. It was in the low 60s when we started at 6:30 a.m. and warmed up to the low 80s by noon.

We were in search of fall colors. Scratch that, we were in the McDowells

We arrived to a mostly empty parking lot and hit the trail. We took the loop clockwise and made the climb to Tom's Thumb, staying in the shade about 95% of the time.

Linda mentioned she needed to meet some of her relatives up top, so I showed her the Ogre's Den.

On the way down, she pointed out a hawk perched on top of a cactus that neither of us could identify. I'm sure the photos will be blurry, but it looked like a cross between a hawk and a seagull or maybe an albino hawk. There was a lot of white on it.

The east side of the Bell Pass Trail went smoothly in the full sun with an occasional breeze.

We took a short break at the top, then mostly coasted downhill to finish.

As we were finishing, I was able to provide a lady starting her hike with some helpful information. She was looking for some loop information and what to do if she saw a snake.

It got a little warm but nothing too crazy. It was great hiking with Linda again.

We didn’t have coffee after the hike.

Let the valley hiking season begin!

dry Mountain Spring Dry Dry
Dry where it crosses the trail. I wonder if the pipe broke further up, or if it just dried up. It used to be quite reliable.

Windgate Bell Loop heat check. It was hot but we started early so not as bad as after 10am. We saw some blue barrels on the loop in several locations and curious what they are for. Looked like water but don't think it was drinking water.

It was incredibly smoky in the lower Verde River Valley, which obscured much of the view to the east. I'd guess this is because of the Horse, Peak and Wolf Fire's smoke settling overnight. Surprisingly, it didn't feel hot once in the sun at Bell Pass, so adding on the two peaks to the loop was easy-peasy with the breezes. It's ridiculous that McDowell Peak has been culture cancelled considering that there's an ammo box up there with a bunch of admitted lawbreakers signed in. Cool stories bros! Why not commit a felony so one of you could be elected president and pardon the others?!

Considering our very busy social lives, we needed a local hike in order to finish early enough for breakfast and other festivities.
We kept a good pace admiring the still strong wildflowers along the way and enjoying the below normal temperatures.
Good day on the trails. Thanks Kelly. :)

didn't do any extras - more interested in elevation gain than double digits
this is a nice workout hike
saw a few people before bell pass, no one until windgate pass
then traffic picked up a bit, especially back on gateway loop

After hiking these trails last week, I had some unfinished business so came out to hike them again, only this time take the upper side of Gateway Loop. My plan was to go over Bell Pass first, but I mistakenly stayed on the Gateway Loop trail, so I ended up going clockwise instead. That was actually nice as it was a change from last week.

It was smoky out from some fire somewhere. I could smell burnt Palo Verde, stinky wood. The smoke didn't bother me much. I suppose I got used to it hiking hundreds of miles in smoke when I hiked the PCT. Clear skies are nice though.

The trail was busy along the Gateway loop but clears out a lot once on Windgate or Bell Pass.

I thought I'd do something a bit different for me this morning. First I walked the Bajada Nature trail, then the Bell Pass Trail to the Windgate Pass Trail to the Gateway Loop trail back to Gateway trailhead.

It was pretty busy until I got a ways up Bell Pass Trail. Once the climbing got serious things thinned out quite a bit and it was pretty quiet until I merged onto the Gateway Loop trail.

The trail is pretty rocky and I was tired and ready to be done near the end, but I did enjoy the time on the trail. Near the end, I heard some birds squawking and realized I hadn't heard any quail all day. I hear and see quail all the time on the trails I normally haunt and thought that was interesting.

Quite a few Fiddlenecks, Lupine, Poppies, Dichelostemma capitatum and a Desert Chicory. Still a week away from a larger explosion.

Quick hike in the McDowell's today, nice out except it was windy and chilly most of the day. The clouds kept rolling in and out. I made a quick visit to PK. 3515, never did that one, and it was nice. There were blue barrels in a few places off trail on Windgate, covered up by netting and rocks. I wonder what they were there for?

Beautiful weather for a hike. I started at the crack of 11 at a surprisingly busy Gateway TH.

My loop was CW starting on the Windgate Trail. I passed a smattering of people until I got to the turn for Toms Thumb. I like the climb up this trail, it's especially nice with the cloud cover. I got passed by a couple of runners.

Once up top, I noticed there was a climber on top of Toms Thumb. I made my way over to and down the East End Trail/Bell Pass Trail, where I had the backside of the McD's to myself.

Really saw nobody until I merged with the popular Gateway Loop, where the Snowbirds and Scottdale's finest were on parade.

At the TH before 6 AM. Started through the pedestrian entrance and finished at the equestrian gate which made for a complete loop. Light traffic the entire hike. Trail conditions were stellar as expected. Saw 1 tarantula and 2 deer along the hike. Really enjoyed this hike, need to get out this way more often.

Started from the 104th Street TH at 6am to cloudy, 88°, and sprinkles. The clouds held on for most of the hike, but it was a sweatfest working my way up to Bell Pass. At the top, with a slight breeze, it was comfortably cool.

A smattering of people out today enjoying the cloudy day. Including a heavyset, shirtless guy that was bragging to his buddy on his diet yesterday. "7 beers and a salad". A salad, really?

From the pass, back down and then CCW on the Gateway Loop.

I ran into @Sun_Ray /Brian and introduced myself. Quite a nice guy. It turned out to be his doppelganger in a, MMC blue shirt. ](*,)

92 and filtered sun to finish.
