Late afternoon hike with my grandson to Hope Camp. Started at the Camino Loma Alta Trail Head. The weather was perfect and the creeks had a light flow to trickle but evidence that with the last rain they were flowing pretty good. Rincon Creek had been flowing as evident where Camino Loma Alta crosses the creek. This was a late afternoon hike and we finished just after sunset.

We went on a quick afternoon hike with our grandson John. He enjoyed seeing the Deer Creek Windmill and the Hope Camp Windmill. We always quiz him about the plants, trees, and different things we see along the way. Hopefully he learns as we go. We went along pretty fast. Grand Dad let him know some hiking tips to help it be easier and more fun. This is a great trail but John needed direction to walk in the part with the least rocks. He has not hiked since the last time we took him so on the way back he was tired and said his legs were sore. Yesterday he turned 14 years old. We got him a Leatherman and case for it. He was very excited to get that. After we completed our hike we all went to eat at Freddy's. Delicious!

Another short hike near home in Saguaro National Park. At The Comino Loma Alta Trail head we started on the Hope Camp then took Coyote Wash to the Ruiz and back on the hope camp. We did this Counter Clockwise this time because we wanted to be at the summit of the loop at sunset. Did pretty good got to the summit with about 10 minutes to spare. Averaged about 2.75 miles per hour which is pretty good when Ginny and I hike together. Dry all the way but the desert showed signs of the fall rains.

The Quilter Trail is very well maintained. We saw one of our favorite saguaros along the way. It is a huge one that has lost an arm since we were last by that way. The day was overcast and we had some light rain now and again. In the afternoon the sun came out. There were several different kinds of wildflowers along the way. What a beautiful area to hike. Not difficult, I didn't bring my hiking poles and did not need them. There were a lot of runners out today. We were quite a way in when we came across two women hikers. They told us about an unusual saguaro to watch for. We made it up quite a way and on the way back we spotted it on the right not too far down. It looked like it crested early in it's life and then went nuts putting out arms. Mark's going to post photos. Would love to see if it blooms! We took a break by a stream we crossed. Lovely day for a hike and even better company!

alleluia, Back in Arizona. Didn't get much hiking while in Lubbock except for a few excursions to New Mexico, Utah and Nevada. Had a little time so we hiked in Saguaro National Park along the Hope Camp and Quilter Trail. Headed in 5 miles before turning around. The desert is looking good, the rains in the last few months have turned the desert green. Lots of people at the Comino Loma Alta Trail Head, runners, bikers and a few hikers. partially cloudy and occasionally some real light rain. Crystal clear sky's.

The 1.35 mile creek along the Quilter had a good flow. (Rincon Creek at the Comino Loma Alta crossing was dry). At the creek crossing 2.5 miles in along the Quilter just below the ridge we saw lots of Feather Trees, more of a bush(Little Leaf False Tamarind). Wasn't sure what this plant was so we had to do a little research when we got back. We found this article

The feather trees are blooming! A prime example of the park’s unique biodiversity, this stunning legume (Lysiloma watsonii) is very rare in the U.S., with wild populations only known around the southwest-facing “inside corner” of the Rincon Mountains. Also known as littleleaf false tamarind or “fern of the desert”

We also saw a very unusual crested saguaro about 2 miles in along the Quilter Trail. Wasn't too visible on the hike up but on the way down this 10 foot high saguaro with about 50 heads was visible. Very unusual specimen. On my GPS route you can see on our return trip where we went off trail about 50 feet to get a closer view. If you aren't looking carefully it is easy to miss. I've hiked this trail at least 3 other times and missed it. I posted some pictures of it.

Another short walk in Saguaro National Park, again at the Camino Loma Alta Trail Head. It has been quite warm and dry so there weren't much options close by for a very late afternoon hike. This time we hiked to the ridge between Deer Camp and Hope Camp before turning around. Got back to the car just as it was getting dark. Don't want to be on the trail if we can't see the snakes.

This trail is excellent just before sunset, views of the sunset are usually spectacular. There are options of the Ridgeview or Ruiz- Coyote Creek Trails depending on time constraints. No Rattlesnakes this time (Tiger or Diamondback) but we did bump into a tortoise heading west along the trail as we were heading east. Felt bad for it because it is so dry here. Wanted to take it home and give it food and water with my tortoises at home but that's a big NO NO, (don't even pick them up or they will expel a bunch of fluid which would be a bad thing for it in this dry weather). It will do just fine, it's been around probably 10 years and it has seen dry seasons before. As an after note it rained .5 inches at my house last night around midnight and maybe more along Tanque Verde Ride, I thought about the tortoise, probably doing a jig in delight for the water.

Trying to get all the Saguaro NP trails in this year.

Started off in a brisk 21 degree morning. Beautiful day. Quilter trail is very nice and the Manning Camp trail down to Madrona is a highway. There were actually a couple rangers at Madrona, whom i talked to pleasantly for a while before heading out to see what kind of shape Rincon Creek is in and how much I could get in on the day. What a fantastic trail this is! I got almost 3 miles in before hitting my turnaround time. I should be able to get the rest coming from the other way sometime soon.

Big excellent day in Saguaro

Short hike in Saguaro National Park to Hope Camp. Our mission was to photograph the full moon as it crested the Rincon Mountain. We have done this hike many times before but it is still enjoyable. Like the last time we tried to photograph the moon rise it was about 20 minutes after the sun set. When it did finally rise my camera didn't function right so the photos didn't come out (it was actually operator error). Hope camp has a good example of a F. Ronstadt Windmill which is from Linda Ronstadt's Grandfather's Hardware store here in Tucson. Very dry all along the trail, you can hear the Prickly pear screaming for water.

We decided to get out for another attempt to see the moonrise. It did not disappoint! Beautiful evening and I always enjoy the Hope Camp Trail. It isn't difficult but the scenery is nice. Rincon Peak is always cool but even more so with the pink tint from the setting sun. It got a little chilly as we were starting back so I appreciated my down jacket and gloves. The moonlight trail was very pretty. I had to tease Mark and tell him another hike where I have not seen a mountain lion! What's up with that?

The calendar said full moon tonight so Ginny and I did a short hike in Saguaro National Park from the Comino Loma Alta Trail Head along the Hope Camp Trail. We had done this trail many times before and thought take this trail to the Ruiz Trail and head up the hill and watch the sun set and moon rise. Got to the top of the hill right at sunset then sat down and waited for the moon to rise. No moon came up and was getting dark so we decided to head back. The moon finally rose on our trip back but 50 minutes after the sun set. The full moon was actually the day before. Not sure where on earth they are calculating the Full moon event but it is a day earlier in Arizona. Could have something to do with the Longitude and latitude differences from where they calculate. Next time I will head up a day early. Was still a pleasant hike, while we sat and waited we enjoyed each others company, felt like a teen ager in a 57 Chevy parked with my date.

Water Report, None. Trail Conditions, It's in the SNP so excellent. No issues walking in the dark (snakes aren't out) and when the moon did come over the mountain it was even easier to see.

The Ruiz Trail intersects the Hope Camp Trail in two places a half mile apart. A loop can be made by connecting with the Coyote Wash Trail for 1.5 miles. I did a modified version of the loop to get a couple more miles and some extra gain.
Though things are drying out here there were still lots of wildflowers to be seen. I also came across a dback on the return on the Hope Camp Trail.
Nice little Mother's Day hike. :)

Short hike today near home on the Quilter Trail. Heard the flowers were out and putting on a magnificent display. That rumor was correct they put on a spectacular display. Hiked to the first water crossing on the quilter just before it gets serious and starts heading up hill. Headed up 1.35 mile wash about 200 yards before deciding it was going to be a wrestling match with the brush so opted not to go any further up stream. We did head down stream about .25 miles, much easier to navigate. Took an hour break where we ate lunch and worked on our sun tans. Headed back the way we came.

Mount Wrightson to the south was showing off it's snow capped peak and Rincon peak did the same. Must have been pretty cold up there because the trees maintained a snow covering the whole day. Good flow in 1.35 mile creek but not so much that it couldn't be crossed with ease. Ginny was lead hiker when she ran into a rattlesnake on the trail. I didn't hear it at first but Ginny jumped in ways I have never seen before. We stopped and took pictures. Called back to some hikers that were about 200 feet behind us and warned them of the snake. They seemed to be reluctant to come any closer. Not sure where they are from but I got the impression they thought the snake was going to chase after them. Last hike in the Tucson area for a while as we are headed to Lubbock for a few months. We will be stopping off in the Chiricahua Mountains for two days and Organ Mountains in New Mexico for 1 day, Have to get in a few more hikes before getting to Lubbock.

Spent Easter with my daughter's family in Vale. They live close to the Loma Alta trailhead. After coffee and a pop tart (yikes) I hit the trail.
From the Loma Alta trailhead I hiked the Hope Camp trail 2.3 miles, then up the Quilter trail. I wanted to get at least as far as I got last year when I hiked this same trail. I ended up a half mile further than last year. I turned around when I saw heavy rain falling in front of Rincon Peak. Fortunately, I avoided the rain save a little sprinkle.
Highlight of the hike was the wildflower show. By far the best I've seen this year. Quilter trail is in great shape.
Chatted with a thru hiker from Vermont, then two more resting by a creek.
Awesome day on the Quilter trail. :)

Went back to where were last weekend to finish off AZT8, doing the north half this time from the Loma Alta TH. Andy was able to make the trip this time. Andy and Wally both have National Park passes, so we didnt have to worry about having a pass to park at the TH. It was somewhat debatable as to whether we needed a pass or not based on how the parking lot there was right on the border of the National Park, and the fact that at the end of our hike, the majority of the cars in the full lot did not have any passes.

This was a very non-eventful hike. Mostly level, easy to follow, cool weather, cloudy skies, mellow bikers, etc. I met the trail steward for this hike at a road crossing and had a nice conversation. Wally and Andy were waiting for me at our turn around point, after lunch we headed back.

The clouds were pretty constant all day, but at times the would break through just enough to need to cover a bit to prevent sunburn. Only until the last few miles did the clouds take over and the overcast skies stayed.

Nice to get this section done easily and quickly. Looking northbound at AZT9 was very daunting, especially with no options to shorten the 27 mile one way hike. Next few hikes looking southbound to the other sections towards Mexico.

Chris resumed his quest for the Holy Grail, oops, I mean completing the AZT and invited me to finish off the Rincon Valley section that he and Wally started the week before.

We left Gilbert about 5am and made it to the Loma Alta Trailhead just inside Saguaro NP East. Chris worked up an out and back route that connected to AZT #8 right were AZT #9h begins via Hope Camp Trail. From there, we hiked down the point on AZT #8 that he and Wally ended their southern hike last week.

We arrived just before sunrise to a mostly empty trailhead and started off. The weather was pleasant and the skies mostly cloudy. This part of the trail had a little up and down and is close to Mica Mountain ridgeline. Lots of large saguaros and wide, but empty washes.

After the little roller coaster hiking on Hope Camp and meeting up with AZT #8, the trail settled into gentle rolling hills with little elevation changes. The further from the moutain, the less saguaros and more shrubs and prickly-pear, with the occasional barrel cacti and yucca. The trail is very well maintained.

We made it to the 8.6 mile mark where Chris and Wally turned around the week before and had a little lunch before heading back.

This part of the AZT seems to be a mountain bike haven. We encountered many groups and some solo riders between the turn around and the Quilter Trail junction. After that, it was more casual hikers coming from the Loma Vista TH.

This part of the trail is not the most scenic, but the Rincon's provide a constant horizon. The weather really cooperated. Mr Sun stayed behind the cloudy skies for most of the hike. That kept the heat level down to a minimum.

I tried to keep up with Wally the Roadrunner, but as usual, he left me in the dust. I wanted to keep a steady pace and think I did fairly well in that department. The trailhead was over-flowing when we got back. Hikers mostly and a group of kids with ebikes. They did stay out very long.

Thanks for the invite Chris. It's always nice hiking with you and Wally.

Needed a short hike so once again we headed to Camino Loma Alta trail head in Saguaro National Park. Started todays hike early about 6AM. Temps started out in the upper 50s and probably rose to in the 70s by 10. This is a nice walk but a little on the ho hum if you have done it a bunch of times. Still nice seeing the sun rise over Rincon Peak. We added a little mileage with a side trip up one of the canyons. Only saw one person who was mountain biking. No water as would be expected this time of year after a dry monsoon.
