Short after work hike. Parked on the north side and did a loop around the most northern peak. Did a CCW loop, staying on the perimeter for most of the loop until I got to the south, where I climbed the saddle and the followed the ridgeline to the top. Admired the views and then descended down the east side. Hit the lower trail and continued my loop around the peak to end where I started. Nice loop. Got to revisit some trails that I hadn't done in awhile. Nice array of wildlife for a city trail....numerous quail, Jack and Peter rabbit, chipmunks, a hawk and 3 hummingbirds at the top of the peak. Temps were nice ....low 90's.

Short after hike. Most of the city parks are closed after 3pm for the 4th, so I opted Shadow Mountain. Parked at my sisters and took the trail coming off of Gelding St. Went CW. Incorporated the Small Loop #312 as described (this involved doing an in and out on what was used as the TH) and then continued CW around the northern portion of this preserve. (I did not loop the second tall peak that resides on the southern side of this preserve). The elevation was kept at a minimum. The only time I climbed was when I had to get over a saddle. Most of this hike was done on user trails that I haven't used I years. Nice to revisit them and nice to just hike without the mental impetus of having to run. Looked to be a very clear day. The views of the McDowells appeared to be sharp. A few puffs of clouds, but no shade was provided. Had the preserve to myself.

I had to hiking on one of the coldest, windiest days of the winter so far. I regretted it. XD I can handle cold, but there is something about being blasted by wind while trying to hike that I just hate.

Dropped the girl off at gym and did a short hike with the boy. Started off skirting some private land and then got to the ridgeline. This was fun for the kid as we followed along the ridge up and down and back up. Just a short scramble up to the top had us looking at 360 views of the north valley. P was able to identify several surrounding peaks and landmarks which was impressive. It is hard to believe there are still peaks within Phoenix that I haven't been to yet. Well.. Check!

Got in a good urban double hike this afternoon, started out by Mountain View about 4:30. Second time up Stoney Mountain, this is a fun quick one with good effort. Be aware, there is a good sized bee gathering about a tenth of a mile up the summit spur trail, it is on the left hand side of the trail in one of the numerous rock holes. They were not aggressive, but if you stumbled into the rock it would make for a pretty lousy day. After this quick one, I rolled over to Acoma to start my way up Shadow Mountain. I climbed the main peak, and then proceeded to hit every high point in the area by way of a convoluted loop. Ran into a few folks up on the summit when I had come around for a second trip up. Otherwise, very few other people out on the trail, surprising for such a great weather day.

Came in from the northeast side of the preserve off of Gelding St. At the initial entry point at the location there are about stairs you have to do and then a decent climb up the side of the hill before the trails flattens off. Did a loop going counterclockwise around the northern most mountain and the hill to the north of it. Summit end from the south side. Saw a few hikers out there, but no wildlife.

Went to both summits and added the loop around the south side.
Cloudy with a few sprinkles and humid but not very hot.

Took the pups on a nice morning hike. It was hard to stay on the intended route. There are a lot of trails going in every direction. I hit all the peaks on the North end. I will be back for a couple smaller peaks on the south, and to do the Mega loop.

Before my hiking meetup I did this easy trail in the preserve as a warm-up. This is nothing to go out of the way for, but it served its purpose.

Did a quick hike after work at Shadow Mountain. I choose this trail description because it came closest to what I probably hiked. There are two prominent points in this "park". For the most part I stayed to the trails on the northern one. Did a lot of up and downs and a few loops as I worked the trails in that area. Never got to the peak or to the south side which is why I chose the "small loop".

Didn't follow the small loop specifically, but incorporated in with some other trails that cover Shadow Mountain. Goal is to eventually do all the trails on this mountain.

Since I had to be in the area I hit up a couple hikes. First Lookout Circ about 11am and it was still a tad nippy. Considerably more people out than I see in the summer. The slopes are Scotland green. Hopefully the wildflowers will come before the cheat grass takes over. On the east side I recall African Daisies from years past, perhaps they'll reappear in January! :)

I passed four teenage girls hiking and starring at their phones. I threw 'em a curve ball and said hi. If it wasn't for the water bottles I would have sworn they were lost. Yet I'm sure some manly dude in boots and such thinks the same seeing me in sandals with a GPS...lol

After some errands and a "snack" I hit up Shadow. This was my first visit ever. Cheat grass has dominated the northern approach slope. I zig zagged all over and hit all the tiny peaks. This kinna reminds me of Westwing with it's short steep slopes. There wasn't anyone else out except a neighbor walking her dog. I was thinking the people that live on SSE were pretty lucky to have a steep grade out their front door. Well that was until I went down it. I don't think I'd want to ski down that on a daily basis. I assume it's not an official trail but it's such a maze who knows. With two park rangers busy directing traffic at Camelback every day I doubt this area sees much attention. Some of the graffiti on the major peak was only a day old. Looks like it's been trashed fairly heavily for fifty years.

All that aside I enjoyed the hike. Heading back I came about 30 feet within a dog. So here I'm thinking to put my hand out for the sniff when I notice there isn't anyone around. Then he headed down off the trail. Then another. Then it dawned on me they were coyotes. After a brief wow moment I got a little concerned. This is a tiny mountain surrounded by homes. What are they doing here and why didn't they run. They did move on and didn't act funny so I figured they weren't rabid and finished the hike.

I have lived on Acoma Drive since 2003. Shadow Mountain is my backyard. The trails here have much to offer in terms of views and various flora/fauna. I have seen at least 3 pack rat dens between the Acoma Drive trailhead and Cave Creek Road. You can sometimes see coyotes here near dusk. Evidence of the coyotes is not hard to find, as they hang their feces conspicuously on low branches of the bushes along the trails. Although being in the park after dark is a no-no, somebody once told me that the view of the fireworks show put on by the local church is awesome on 4th of July ;)
