Bruce and I opted for a day of hiking near Flag before avoiding each other for the next six weeks. First on the list was Kendrick Peak. We headed up the main trail, which had less shade on the lower part than is used to have. I was quickly reminded of how little higher elevation hiking I’ve done this year, ugh. Summit views were nice, and it was comfortably breezy most of the time. The fire tower was empty, but has some broken windows, and someone has trashed the place. On the descent, we left the main trail and headed down a ridge towards East Newman Hill while Bruce looked for signs of the old route the lookout staff used. No luck there, but the offtrail was easy and scenic. Saw several deer. At the bottom, we contemplated hiking up Newman Hill, but decided to save that for another day. Ate lunch while we walked the road back to the trailhead.

From Kendrick, we drove over to the Lava River Cave. It was busy, as expected. We grabbed some lights and made our way to the tube, where a family who would have absolutely exceeded the GVWR of even my largest truck was blocking the entrance. The journey from the parking lot had exhausted their monthly activity allotment, and they were frozen in place in the chill air, fighting for oxygen. Bruce and I picked our way around them, avoiding patches of ice and wet rocks and made it into the tube without incident. Once inside, we had some long stretches of solitude, finally reaching the crowds in the back third or so of the tube. A large group of disadvantaged youths from Tucson were enjoying the wonders of northern AZ. They were well behaved, but a big group, so we timed our exit to avoid them. Hiking through the tube is interesting, with neat geology, and worthy of a visit.

Our next stop was Wild Bill Hill. No specific agenda on this one, other than wanting to see the hoodoos. We parked along the road, crawled under a fence, crossed a meadow, and made our way to a draw on the northeast side of the hill. As we ascended the draw, the hoodoos came into view. The lower part is easy, but it quickly got steeper and steeper. Terrible footing on the pea gravel. Amazing geology though. We climbed high enough that we didn’t want to scoot back down, so instead committed ourselves to finding a way to keep climbing this steep gravel with no handholds. We awkwardly made our way to the top, where just a few hundred feet of travel was by far the toughest exertion of the day. Relieved to be standing upright again, we debated descent routes. The ridge immediately to the east of the hoodoo ampitheater looked to be a good option, but we wanted to explore more, knowing we could backtrack if needed. We ventured west on a use trail to check out the ridge to the west. It would have been a perfect option, except for a treacherous 20’ section. We decided that section wasn’t worth the risk, and kept following the use trail. It was a great trail for a while, then got rough and was taking us the wrong direction. We bailed down a drainage on the NNW side of the hill. Not too steep, and the soft ground made for good footing. Once down, we cut across the meadow, enjoying the cloudy afternoon and even a few sprinkles of rain.

Good trio of hikes for the day. And reasonably good traffic on the 17 for both directions.

With the warmest temperatures of the year hitting the valley, Linda and I headed north to the high country for some cooler mountain air. I had a few things on my agenda that had long been on the back burner, so with that in mind, I made some plans, and we were on our way.

First up: Kendrick Peak. I'd done this one numerous times, usually as part of a bigger loop, as it's always a good warm-weather workout. We made our way up to the lookout, passing only a handful of people. After taking in the clear views at the top and checking out the unmanned lookout—with two broken windows—we made our way back down. This time, with a twist.

I was curious about the reported shortcut from the lookout that supposedly drops from one of the trail’s switchbacks westward to the forest road about a half-mile above the Kendrick parking area. We found no semblance of a trail or route but enjoyed the easy and scenic off-trail jaunt to the forest road. We saw five mulies on the way down.

Next up was the Lava River Cave. It being a Friday and school being out, I knew we wouldn’t be alone. There were quite a few people there, though not as many as expected. Some were climbing into the hole who had no business being there. The lava tube is really quite impressively large, with smooth ceilings and walls. The floor, however, is rough lava, and you have to keep an eye on your footing.

The final itch to scratch for the day was the unassuming Wild Bill Hill. After a pleasant walk across a meadow to reach our red, gravely rock entrance, we scrambled two steps up and one step back until we reached a ridge with better footing. The geology here is quite impressive, with nice views back toward Kendrick. We debated our exit route, knowing we wouldn’t be returning the way we came. After testing one route, we clicked onto what appeared to be a well-used game trail, which eventually led us down through a canyon-ish wash area. It worked out, and we made our way back to our ride with a few pleasant sprinkles along the way.

It was good catching up with Linda again and getting in a hike in the high country.

Cancelled my canyoneering plans due to the monsoon storms and decided to head up north instead. Wild Bill Hill was one of the three locations my friend and I explored within a action packed 24 hour time span.

My intention of going to Ol Wild Bill was of course to check out the unique hoodoo filled eroded section so I didn't even bother going to the official TH and went straight for the good stuff!
A nice gradual climb with incredible views of Kendrick and Humphreys made this such a pleasant stroll up the hillside.

Upon getting the first glimpse of the hoodoo canyon area I absolutely fell in love with the contrast in colors of the rich reddish volcanic rock compared to the green ponderosa pines! We relaxed and soaked in the views up top via a nice game use trail and then made our way down the hardened eroded main drainage while the hoodoos towered above us. As the afternoon storm rolled in and it began to rain it made me wonder just how cool it would be to see that volcanic drainage gushing with rain water considering there would be a couples of nice cascade opportunities within the path of its flow, I always find myself about thinking waterfalls even when I'm nowhere near one  .

We enjoyed a refreshing shower of mountain rain the remainder of our hike along with the satisfying feeling of visiting yet another unique Arizona gem.

Quick evening hike starting from the 2013 Hazfest camp. We started this hike as dusk was setting in. We made quick time and climbed up the old road to the saddle. From there I made a quick summit as darkness set in. We used our headlamps and the light of the moon to return to camp. I’m bummed I missed out on the hoodoos near the summit. Will have to check them out another time when I have more time.

Got a pop up charter to Flagstaff and had lots of time for hiking it was a beautiful afternoon. After getting settled into my hotel room I headed out to get some hiking and SOTA fun. The roads were dry so navigating with the car was no problem. I did find an interesting marker on the way in showing I was on a historic wagon trail. I arrived at the base of the hill around 415 and headed up. I attacked it from the north side made the summit in about 20 min. I hydrated and set up my SOTA gear and began working contacts. The bands were in so so condition. After spending about 90 min on the summit I decided given my car I should be on pavement before I lost daylight so I headed back down. I got back to I-40 as the sun was setting. I headed back to Flag for a nice dinner and some people watching.

Decided to check this one out as a late-afternoon/sunset hike. Didn't go to the TH as described in the description here on HAZ, just parked at a pullout on the main road just south of the turnoff for the lava tubes. A short walk through the ponderosas and then a nice meadow opened up. Took the northwest ridge up. It was pretty steep but at least it wasn't super loose. Popped up right by the little hoodoo valley. Checked it out for a couple minutes before taking the trail out to the south summit. Nice views out there! Saw the old jeep road coming up the south slopes. Headed back to the hoodoo valley for sunset action. I really wanna come back and hammock camp up there sometime. Headed down as the sunset faded. I was paranoid about walking in circles in the woods after dark trying to get back to the car. Found it pretty easily though. It got dark pretty quick in the trees, so I was forced to use my headlamp. Haven't had to do that in a long while. Great hike, and what a lovely area.

Looking at the satellite image of the area, I decided to start at a different location. I should have looked at the topography map instead. I didn't realize the road I was taking went straight up the hill. I drove up about 20% of the hill, then parked. I started hiking from there. Very nice area. The dogs and I, hiked to all the key areas. On the way back I saw an animal trail going around the mountain. I figured I would take this to see where it goes. It took me back around, close to the trailhead. Score!! I then hiked up the trail, then back down to my truck.

50mph winds all day!! Gusts up to 60...

After a Lazy Morning at HAZfest, it was time to get the circulation going...Alex and Larry were talking about doing the Hill, so it was a no-brainer, especially after hearing about the Wildflowers and Views on top...
Unlike most people, who elected to drive to the Base, :oplz: [-( We Hiked it from Camp... :wlift:  (Personally, I just think Larry didn't want me to drive, although I think he's used to it now...I didn't even make him sick driving up to Snowbowl... )Everyone missed such a great stroll through the Meadow!!!

Started up to the Saddle and did ok with the Uphill, as long as I didn't have to engage in Conversation, using up what little Oxygen I had... Got up to the Saddle and hung a right for the actual "Wild Bill Hill"...Loved it up top! Great Views, and the Wildflowers were gorgeous, especially when Larry wasn't busy stomping them down... :sl: (One of those, "you really had to be there moments"... :sl: ) Took some pictures up top, had one of Larry's "Intruders" take a pic of the three of us and then we were off to the other "unnamed" Peak...

Somehow, the whole time we were up there, we missed the Hoodoos completely... :tt: Sounds like a Return Trip is needed... Got up to the other Peak. Hardly any views from the Top due to thick Pines, but we found an Outcrop that afforded really nice Views to the South...Spotted a couple of more HAZer Hooligans on Wild Bill Hill and got some shots of them as well... :D

True to my Nature, I offered up doing a little Loop instead of an Out and Back...True to Larry's Good Nature, he agreed...Alex doesn't know me very well, so his agreement was based strictly on ignorance... :sl: Sooo, down the side of the Unnamed Peak we went, and then around the front...Wasn't bad at all... :D Caught up to another Road on the West side of the Meadow and followed it back to Camp...

What a great little Hike! Views, Wildflowers, small Workout, and a ton of Laughs with great Company...Most of the Laughs were at Larry's expense, especially when we tried to find his Cell Phone in his Pack, but I know Larry, and he'll get even... :D  :GB:

Thanks Larry and Alex!! It was a thoroughly Entertaining Jaunt and very Cool!!! : app :

I had just cleaned up after Kendrick and joined the group around the massive fire when Hippy began rounding up a group for a sunset hike up Wild Bill. I only had one day up here, and I was going to make the most of it, so I finished my Grand Canyon Sunset Amber Ale ( :D ) and hopped in Chumley's Taco.
It looked like a little bump from camp, but the combination of Kendrick, 2 beers and 8000 feet of elevation made odd little bumps of water begin to form on my forehead. I made a mental note to Google it when I got home and slogged up to the saddle.
We broke into two groups, with the more adventurous scrambling up the higher unnamed peak, and my group choosing to play amongst the flowers on the meadow that is Wild Bill.
Soon the group merged again and we all enjoyed a cloudless sunset, marveling at the idyllic expanse below. The air cooled and we worked our way back down to the trucks, piling in the beds and bouncing back to camp, smiling and laughing. I looked at the expression on the face of the young daughter of a HAZ member (I think it was Madison - so many new names) and couldn't help but think this would be a memory that would last her a lifetime. Just a simple ride in the back of a pickup through a field, hard to put your finger on really. To be surrounded by grown-up strangers who haven't lost the wonder of exploring their world. I hope it was as inspiring to her as it was to me.

Toward the end of the afternoon the bulk of the HAZfest crew had gathered round, sunset was just about an hour away, someone was taking a nap, I was stuffing my face with fire heated stir fry and everyone else was lounging around.

I had the brilliant idea to suggest a trek up Wild Bill but really didn't want to walk the mile to the base...good thing Uncle woke up when he did, we were able to fit a good chunk of the group that gathered for my hike into the Chum-mobile and off we went.

The hoodoos on the "other side" are great! I got to play around on a few and we ran up the southern most "peak" to watch sunset...this was a PERFECT hiking group, I'm so glad we all got to hang out up on Wild Bill, the hike was steep but fun, wish I'd seen that snake though :-p

Add Madison and Rose to the hiking partners on this one.

We headed up for sunset via an old road/trail on the west side that leads up the draw to the saddle.

There is an alternate route that goes up an old road along the southwest ridge to the south peak.

The south peak is treeless and features the best views. The northwest and northeast peaks are pine covered and feature limited views. The ridge and canyon that run due north feature cool hoodoos and nice views of Kendrick and Government Prairie. (If you look closely you can even see the mall parking lot sometimes referred to Lava River Tube just a mile away.)

Nice flowers on the south peak.

I wouldn't drive from Phoenix to hike this, but if you are camping less than a mile away for whatever reason, it's a must. :)

Another wonderful weekend with wonderful people in a wonderful place...wonderful!

Really though, it was a pleasure meeting so many new HAZzers and reuniting with old friends as well.
I was a little disappointed with the campfire situation this time around but...nonot can't be expected to create perfection every time...especially when Uncle Chums didn't provide him with NEARLY enough deadfall...oh well, maybe next year.

I was very pleased with how ridiculously clean our massive campsite was after our departure, great job everyone and thank you!! :y:

Bob and Bruno let me go up Wild Bill Hill with them after lunch at the Hazfest campground. The climb was a little more of a workout then it looked like.Once on top Bob found a comfy place for a power nap. :y: I started snoring so Bob made me get up and hike to the second peak. What great views from up there.A nice mixture of flowers too.Nice little hike. :)

After lunch, Denny and I and Bruno headed towards Wild Bill Hill. On the way, Bruno befriended a cow who hung out with us before re-joining his other friends. This one feels a little steeper then it was but not sure why....maybe the Kiltlifters and EggBaconCheeseburger. Denny and I built a cabin on Wild Bill hill and then took a nap before heading over to Wild Bill Jr. I think the cinders took its toll on Bruno's back paws which have two raw spots. He was out cold for the whole ride home. We went for a swim when we got home and he has been chillin in or by the pool most of the day today.

It was nice to meet a couple new HAZ people, I just wish I could have stayed all weekend.

My first trip to Wild Bill Hill, and talk about surprises! You would never know the hoodoos are here--you basically drive by them on the way to the trailhead and can't see them. It's a good workout making it up to the first saddle, and the views are amazing. I wrote this one as a hike, so read the writeup for all the information. Spent alot of time in Tibber-mode, including taking shots for panoramas.

Hannah, Skippy, and I were "History Detectives" again completing sections of the Historic Trail between Flagstaff and westward to Government Prairie. I've been gathering "bits and pieces" of information piecing together the exact route the old wagon road/immigrant trail followed in anticipation of creating a HAZ hike description.

Today was another combination of off-roading (actually following a variety of city streets and Forest Roads) plus hiking. The maps we used can be found in "A Guide to the Beale Wagon Road through Flagstaff Arizona" and "A Guide to the Beale Wagon Road through the Coconino National Forest", both by Jack Beale Smith.

I started the day with a 4:45am alarm, picked up Hannah from NAU and we were at the Buffalo Park TH by 8:00am. We located the vandalized remains of a historic marker and commemorative sign near the entrance of Buffalo Park beside the water tank reservoir. Cedar Road has been relocated and the McMillan Mesa Trail now appears to follow some of the original wagon road route.

We then followed one of the later Beale Wagon Road routes towards the heart of Flagstaff connecting with the Overland Road Historic Trail (see HAZ hike description http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=499 ).

We stopped at the Museum of Northern Arizona to view San Francisco Springs presumed to be within the Rio de Flag canyon on the west side of the museum. Unfortunately none of the people on staff today at the museum had any knowledge about the Beale Wagon Road.

Tom Jonas http://www.tomjonas.com/swex/beale.htm indicates;
"Jack Beale Smith tells me that the Beale Wagon Road passed between the museum building and the road at this point. There is a spring immediately behind the museum in a small canyon which was a watering stop for the Whipple expedition and the Beale Wagon Road. Whipple called it San Francisco Spring."

After our stop at the Museum of Northern Arizona we made our way to Leroux Springs located at the north side of Fort Valley, off FR516 (aka Snowbowl Drive). From Leroux Springs the Beale Wagon Road more-or-less follows the gas pipeline right-of-way until it intersects again with Hwy 180.

We located one of the historic markers near the intersection of Hwy 180 and FR151 (aka Hart Prairie Road) and another just west of the intersection of Hwy 180 and FR222B. The old wagon road follows FR222B a short distance until it veers northwest along an unmarked 4WD Forest Road. With the path blocked by a substantial mud hole, we doubled back to FR222B and continued west until we reached FR9008N.

Traveling north on FR9008N to the intersection with FR9009N, we parked the F-150 and located historic markers and blazes where the Beale Wagon Road crosses. We hiked west along the old wagon road encounter elk along the way. Nearby sounds of gunshots and ATV's made us wary of continuing along the route.

Back at the truck again, we made our way to FR171 and located the historic markers demarcating the Beale Wagon Road crossing near the intersection with FR??? I failed to take note of the Forest Road number, but can report it is the first road north of FR171C along FR171. We hiked both east and west of these markers.

Later we followed FR??? (first road north of FR171C and south of FR156) in a westerly direction towards Wild Bill Hill. We hiked up this ancient volcano and obtained spectacular views in all directions. Government Prairie was visible to the west, along with Government Knoll and Rain Tank Hill where we finished our previous hike along the Beale Wagon Road.
