| no partners | | First of a couple of hikes for the day. This was with my wife. Started from the Peavine TH around 9am. (There is a $3 fee to park here. The same would hold true if you were to park at the other end - Watson Lake Park. Plenty of parking available in both spots. However, near the Watson Park end, just off the 89, there is a lake overlook, with parking for about 10 cars that appears to be free).
Took the Peavine Trail about .1 miles to the Discovery Trail. The juncture is just past the bridge and is signed. The trail drops down 10 feet (that is all the elevation change that you'll see on this trail) and heads in a northwest direction. The trail is easy to follow though there are a couple of spurs that lead to benches or to the banks of the lake. None of these were very long in length. The first half (.5 miles)of the trail is well shaded, passing under some massive cottonwoods. There are two bridges that crossed dry channels. The second half of the trail opens allowing views of the lake and the dells. Very picturesque. Though you do have traffic from 89 immediately to the west. Wife and I walked around the park area (very nice facilities) and watched the avian wildlife for awhile (primarily ducks and geese to my uneducated mind).
There is also a nature trail just to the west of the Discovery Trail that act as an outer loop to the Discovery. You'll come upon one end of this nature trail almost immediately upon descending from the Peavine (about 30 yards). This nature trail connects back to the Discovery Trail just south of the larger bridge. This nature trail is not signed , but you'll know you are on it if you see plant descriptors along the way. (There is a connector to this nature trail directly from the Peavine TH, near the reatrooms/ramada. This connector is right at a sign that says Watson Lake Riparian Preserve. But currently this connection is closed, so you will have to access this nature trail via the Discovery). I also believe that this nature trail crosses the Sun Dog Trail, but there was no signage so I am unsure about. |
