I decided to stay close to home and do this lasso loop hike. I did the loop clockwise, and added in an 0ut-and-back ascent of Bell Pass.

The temps were cool and there was lots of cloud cover, so it was a great morning for a hike.

I decided to stay close to home and do this hike today. I did the loop clockwise and added in an out-and-back up to Bell Pass to get a little extra distance and elevation gain.

I started fairly early and had a light windbreaker on for a couple of miles, but took it off once the sun got up good.

The warm temperatures made it feel more like spring than winter. With near-zero rain this fall I suspect that the 2025 spring wildflower season will be a dud.

I decided to stay close to home and do this hike again today. I did the loop CW, and also took a side trip up to Bell Pass.

We had some rain yesterday afternoon and the trail was a tad soft early, but it was drying out pretty good on the way back.

There is not much in the way of wildflowers yet in this area; there should be some in the coming weeks though. The desert is really green right now.

It was a nice day out there with some clouds doing a nice job of filtering the sun.

I saw a nice 6 point buck on the way back, around the Dixie Mine.

I did this lasso loop clockwise with a side-trip up to Bell Pass.

There weren't any clouds out, but the temperature was cooler than it has been and there was a nice breeze blowing most of the way.

You could smell and see smoke from a wildfire near the landfill on Highway 87 and Gilbert Road; so the air quality wasn't the best.

At Bell Pass I went a short distance on the use trail that goes up toward McDowell Peak. I will check it out further once winter gets here.

This was great hiking weather -- no sun with a cool breeze. It was almost cold at Bell Pass, so I descended as soon as I got up there.

There are still a few wildflowers out.

Ricardos de Azul were once again the winner of the wildflower derby, with fiddlenecks and lupine competing for second place. Brittlebush is lagging behind, but looks poised to explode before long.

With rain in the forecast for this afternoon, I decided to stick close to home and do this hike today.

I followed the guide route, except that I added in a hike up to Bell Pass and back from the Bell Pass Trail-Prospector Trail junction.

There weren't many people out today, so I basically had the trails to myself.

It looks like March is coming in like a lion; but I bet that it goes out like a ham!

I saw a fair amount of Blue Richards, although there were also a few lupine and poppies here and there. The poppies were closed up today though due to the cool, cloudy weather.

Amazingly, everyone showed up for this Meetup. All capable + friendly. Prevailing opinion was they were fatigued but the outing wasn't anything too crazy. Bell pass & Dixie Mine were the only trails we saw people. Much needed escape from sorrow.

In order to get to the hike, you have to drive to the gated housing area in Fountain Hills. Park outside the gate (there's parking and rest rooms) and walk about .25 miles to the trailhead.

The hike is relatively easy, without long uphill or downhill stretches. Our moving average was about 2.9 miles per hour.

On this day 2/25/2019, the trail was fairly dry, with some areas of mud. The muddy areas could easily be avoided.

The lollypop loop was done counter clockwise. Dixie Mine trail to Coachwhip, Coachwhip to Windmill, Windmill to Bell Pass, Bell Pass to Prospector and Prospector back to Dixie Mine. Make sure to make a right turn from Prospector on to Dixie Mine.
The temperature was comfortably cool, but sunny, after a couple days of cold weather.

The hills still had snow cover in the shaded areas.

The desert was amazingly green with a profusion of poppies blooming, and many other flowers starting to bud.

Did the loop part clockwise. I had intended to take Coachwhip out to Pemberton, then connect with Dixie Mine, but I hadn't realized beforehand Coachwhip went both North and South from the intersection with WIndmill. I chose incorrectly and went right. I took the rest of dixie mine out to pemberton, but my water supply was just barely too low to be comfortable going back using coachwhip; it would have added a half hour.

Nice stroll in the desert. Hiking in the MMRP always reminds me of when my brothers and I would hike around the then desert near McKellips and Power Road where we grew up as kids. Good times.

To my surprise the trails were very empty. I counted only 3 bikers and 4 hikers that we crossed paths with.

Very nice trailhead.

Thanks Angela for a good alternate hike from Fountain Hills TH in the McDowells to accomodate my timing constraints. This turned out to be a good one - some walking, some flowers, some uphill (Bell Pass extension was great), a exceptionally clear & beautifully breezy day in the McDowells and some good miles.

We even got to explore some at a mining camp & shaft along Prospector trail and scoped out some " Let's check this out" future opportunites!

Ironically, I did this lasso loop two years ago plus one day. It’s a great, easy hike on good trails, and has just enough AEG to keep it interesting. You get a glimpse of a mine, a constant view of almost all the McDowell Mountain Range, and you go by an old cattle watering hole complete with corrals, water tanks, spring boxes and a windmill.
I did the loop-portion clockwise this time and got rid of most of the AEG within the first 3 miles.

The track is comprised of six named trails and a small portion of the Thompson Pk Road (twice). Once off the Dixie Mine Trail, you just make right turns at every trail intersection and soon you’ll be right back on the Dixie Mine Tr for the return to the TH. Basically, you‘re ‘circling’ the mountain that the Dixie Mine is in (Pk 3025). I imagine the valley between Pk 3025, and East End Pk was once full of cattle, since ranchers went to great lengths to build the corrals, windmill and water storage.

Again, this is a nice hike, on good trails, and it’s a short drive from the Phoenix area.
All good things. :)

Judy and I have done the Dixie Mine Trail in the past but were looking for some additional mileage on a trail we've not done before. Did the loop counter clockwise:Dixie Mine Trail, Coachwhip, Windmill, Bell Pass, Prospector then return on Dixie Mine. It was great being on the East side of the McDowells after doing dozens of hikes on the other side...Windgate Pass, Bell Pass loop, Tom Thumb. Interesting that we only saw one other group on hikers once on the loop portion and I had the feeling they did not know where they were. I think they made a wrong turn off Windgate or Bell Pass. They just had the look and when I asked where they started...after a long pause they said "you know that housing area".
Our time includes all the rest and lunch stops.

Was going to do several hikes on the east side again, starting with this hike. This turned out not to be a good day. Got a late start and didn't get to the the TH until after 6am and on the the way there (on Golden Eagle Ave), I saw a dead javelina on the side of the road with its mate standing nearby :( . The TH is small, but rather swanky. I had to hike about .5 miles along a sidewalk to get to the actually trail. Took the single track about two miles to get to the loop. Went clockwise taking the Thompson Trail, Prospector Trail, Bell Trail, Windmill, Coachwhip and then back to the Dixie Mine Trail. Trails were slightly muddy. Weather was muggy and cloudy with very little wind. The nearby peaks (Thompson, Thumb Butte) danced in the clouds. About half way through loop started feeling a little ill. So instead of looking forward to the next hike I just focused on finishing the trail. Hike was ok considering, but this was a nice way on accessing some of the backside trails.

This is an excellent 11 mile hike, if your goal is to just get out and take a leisurely stroll in the desert, or if you desire a warm-up hike to get in shape for more difficult hikes.

The name of this loop-hike appears to be derived from its parking lot location in Fountain Hills. The parking lot is located on Golden Eagle Blvd, just before a gated community.
It's a nice paved lot just for hikers, with real bathrooms in a building adjacent to the lot.
From the lot you walk past the guard house of the gated community, and follow "side walk directions" to the actual Dixie Mine trailhead.

This loop-hike traverses both McDowell Mountain Regional Park (bring $2 for the lock-box), and Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve It uses 6 different named trails, and a bit of the Thompson Pk Rd. If this sounds a bit complex, believe me it's not. I did the hike counter-clockwise and, while on the loop portion, all you do at each trail intersection, is turn left until you hook up with the Dixie Mine trail again, for the end leg.

We stopped at the Dixie mine and toured both atop all the tailings, and below in the high vegetation wash. The loop portion of the hike goes around the mountain that Dixie Mine is in.

As we hiked on the Windmill Trail portion, I noticed alot of green foliage & many trees in one low section, off to the south a few hundred feet. From the trail that's all you can see, unless you look very closely. There's an old windmill amongst the green. (ergo the name, Windmill Trail).
The area must have springs that ranchers discovered long ago, as there's a slowly decaying infrastructure of water tanks, wells, corals, and that windmill. It's a nice place to stop and explore.

Further on the loop is a flat, cleared area that must have included a ranch house or some type of outbuilding, as there are the remains of a stove, mattress spring etc strewn around. Possibly it was the location of a dwelling for miners or prospectors. Directly adjacent to this cleared area is a mine shaft, plus atop the mountain you're looping, there's signs of mining.

Again this is an excellent, leisurely hike with great views of the McDowell Mountains from start to finish.
