I'm trying to fit in some lower-elevation hikes before it gets too hot, and Wood Canyon was an area I hadn't visited before, so I pulled together some routes that gave us a few options for the day. We drove a short distance off Arnett Road and parked at a small pullout near a cattle guard, just before a wide wash. In hindsight, we the road was good enough that we could've driven farther with no issues, but that was close enough to where we planned to start.

We hiked along the road and passed some stacked-rock walls early on, and as the road curves to the south, the impressive geology of the area starts to show. The yellowish rock is reminiscent of the Goldfields (unfortunately, there's also some graffiti reminiscent of the Goldfields), and there were plenty of caves, arches, and unique formations throughout the day. We passed a fairly large cave about a mile in that had an active beehive above the entrance that kept me out.

We eventually left the creek bed to go up to Tower Arch, our first destination. It's best viewed from the south side, with a flat area between two rock outcroppings [ youtube video ] . I circled around the other side of the big formation and returned to the creek bed, then it was off toward Peak 4054.

Getting to the top looked much tougher from the east side, but I circled around to a chute on the west side of the peak. Getting up to the base of the cliffs wasn't particularly steep, but the tall grass got annoying quickly, and I picked up hundreds of foxtails. The chute was a little steeper but only required some minor scrambling, and the views from the top were fantastic, especially overlooking the rugged terrain to the south toward White Canyon Wilderness.

The summit register was 45 years old and the peak doesn't get much traffic. Two days after it was placed in Feb. 1979, a second group signed it, then no one until 1986. There were a handful of entries from each decade since, and I saw a few HAZ names: Grasshopper and @ssk44 from 2011 and @hikerdw from 2018, which was the last entry before mine.

[ youtube video ]

I headed back down, and we still had plenty of time, so we backtracked and hiked part of the White Canyon to Wood Canyon route. There are more caves and arches along that route, though I didn't explore the largest cave because of bees (again)...this time there was a huge, buzzing colony of bees on the cliff wall near the cave. I was surprised to find any semblance of a trail on the route, but in some areas it was very easy to follow, though in many places it was completely hidden in tall grass. Someone had tied bright ribbons/rope to branches to mark the route. We hiked a little more than a mile in that direction before turning around.

On the hike out, I took a detour up to Peak 3820. There's a long ridge northeast of the peak with a fairly gentle grade that I planned to follow, but I ended up going for a more direct route that was very brushy and slowed things down, but the views from the top were worth the effort.

I did a better job sticking to the ridge on the way down, and we explored another cave near the road. No bees around this one, so we went inside and looked around a little. After wading through thick, tall grass all day, my socks and boots were almost entirely covered with foxtails when we got back on the road...I looked like I was wearing fur socks.

Overall, it was a good intro to the area--a nice mix of peaks, caves, arches, and cool geology, and the clouds and shadows today enhanced the scenery. We saw two snakes, had to dodge an angry cow that didn't want to share the road, and saw no other hikers all day, just two OHVs, and the weather was very comfortable. I'll be pulling foxtails out of my socks for months, but I plan to return to do more hiking around Wood Canyon. As a wise man once said...

We left our parking area just or Arnett Canyon road, south of Superior where there were a number of campers enjoying the area. We walked the road for about 3 miles and decided to approach Tower arch from the south trail rather than coming in from the west side as we have done in the past. We were excited to see the Bobcat on the road walk in. My first sighting after hiking many years. We revised our route to come up from the south side trail. It made it fun to do scramble through the upcropping rocks rather than dropping down through them as we have done in the past. I think everyone enjoyed visiting the tower after the long road walk. The visit to Los Hermanos for a green chili burro is always the highlight for me.

Well Grasshopper snagged us again :) with the tease of another Arch. Little did we know how many we would encounter, lost track, they were everywhere and every size, but the Mother of them all, the Tower Arch was the highest of them all. If you enjoy the smooth lichen covered rock of the Goldfields, this to us has so much more character and shapes that we enjoyed while in the Goldfields. We were on Grasshoppers route when Roger wanted to check out a spring he thought was across the creek, but as soon as we crossed we came upon a horse trail . Wait, this was noted on CannondaleKid's triplog of 2012, OK let's follow and come up the backside and meet up with Grasshopper's rte. But sad to say when we did meet up we didn't pay attention and missed going up to the saddle for the Tower Arch viewpoint :( ](*,) :sorry:  . So we opted to miss Peak 4054 and go around and pick up his route on the way back to catch the Arch. So glad we did, but if you go, don't get discouraged if you can't see the Arch from the saddle, we thought what the hay where is it, route looked like it went down and around, which was precarious to do, I said let's go up a couple of shelves that were behind us and check it out, sure enough as we turned around and looked up there it was  :y: We'll be back out to explore Woods Canyon again for sure., Thanks Grasshopper for the idea and route.

After seeing my photos of the area from a few days before Tracey wanted to see the area first-hand.

For our first hike we made a loop climbing around one formation then up to the saddle just below arch. With no way all the way up to the arch we settled for the closest spot we could to it. From there we finished our loop and returned to the car.

Then we drove back out a half-mile before embarking on our second hike. This time we will follow Wood Canyon well past Peak 4054, which I had climbed two days earlier. We went far enough to see into the White Canyon Wilderness, but did not continue due to the time used up on our first hike.

We will return soon to follow the full length of Wood Canyon and into White Canyon.
I posted 50 photos on HAZ, the full set of 72 are on my web-site.

Part I

Hank and I set out for a day of adventure on Saturday. We got our moneys worth... Our first mission was to reach a large mountaintop arch that I had discovered on a prior mountain biking trip. The front side of the butte was completely shadowed and the low sinking sun was shining directly through the opening. In ten years of coming to this area, I had never seen it before that day. The setting looked amazing!

I wasn't sure if we would be able to reach the location but Hank was ready and willing to try. We ended up circling the entire butte looking for a route. Everywhere we looked was nothing but vertical rock face with no visible safe routes. I was completely deflated by this point. When I was just about ready to give up, my arch finally came into view. There it is!! I must get up higher somehow for a better view. My excitement had put me out ahead of Hank at this point. I was climbing up those rocks like a mountain goat. It looked like an adjoining secondary butte had a manageable route. The initial lower ledge was almost too high. Three ledges later, I was standing on the flat summit of a tower of rock with epic views of the arch and surrounding area. What an amazing setting to experience in person. By this time, Hank had caught up with me at the saddle. With a little persuasion and support I talked him into climbing up onto the butte to see what I was seeing. He just had to see this!

Although we "technically" didn't reach the arch, I was easily satisfied with our accomplishment. I was close enough. I feel there's a climbable route to the arch (maybe) from the south saddle, however coming down safely will require rope and that's assuming there is a good anchor point on top. I didn't like the odds. Do you feel lucky??

In April'09 Eric invited me to join him for a 7.5ml "Wood Canyon-Upper Rim" off-trail loop hike. I really enjoyed this area and thought our hike rated a "5". From this 2009 hike I had this pic--> http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=93413 that had always lingered in the back of my mind as possibly being a great location for a remote Indian Ruins, but I had since forgotten about scheduling a return visit for an exploratory hike of this butte until Eric returned to this area in mid Dec'10 for a mountain bike ride and discovered a visible arch on my previously pictured ruins butte. This was all I needed to invite myself to join him for another visit to this area and off-trail exploratory hike to see if we could find a route to safely summit this butte to physically see, touch, and record in pics the arch as well as to confirm or deny an ancient Indian Ruins on top of this butte.

We were successful in finding a good off-trail route (see my posted default GPS hiking track with driving route to TH location) and confirming a very nice arch for viewing (please see our posted pic sets). We both thought it enjoyable enough to document it with this new HAZ hike description so others can also enjoy.

Unfortunately, after almost circling the entire butte, we were unable to find a safe hiking route up to the summit top of this large butte to confirm or deny my suspicions of there also being an ancient Indian Ruins. We both feel that the summit is safely doable by more qualified canyoneering hikers, but not by us.

Another excellent hiking day in the Woods Canyon- Upper Rim area, south of Superior off Hwy 177 and just a short distance north of our White Canyon Wilderness. :D
