Finally set aside the time to hike to the campground. It was a beautiful day too, with lots of clouds and cool temperatures from a passing low pressure system.

I brought my bigger day pack so I could carry more water, snacks, and a proper lunch.

The hike up felt slow, but it might have been because the previous day was leg day.

The last mile before the campground was quite brushy. The trail was a bit hard to see from time to time but abundant cairns pretty much eliminated any prospect of losing it.

The campground itself was nice, a very nice place to spend the night. The Clivus Multrum was different… only screened on three sides.

Nice as it was, the campground didn’t have stellar views like the hike up or down. It’s a good place to stop for the night but didn’t seem like a destination in itself. The hike up had countless spectacular viewpoints that each seemed a better prize for the effort it took to get there.

The return trip was indeed spectacular. I got to watch scattered rainstorms crossing the valley and surrounding mountains all the way down. It was a bit like watching the Battle of Five Armies from a distance. I got sprinkled on a couple of times, too.

The Tanque Verde trail was the main event of our two days in the south of Tucson. My nephew and I hiked half of the trail last Thanksgiving, and I wanted to return and try to knock out the entire trail.
Kelly joined me without much coercion.
We arrived at the trailhead at first light, trying to get most of the elevation gain in before the 95 degree heat set in. Saw lots of bunnies and bats driving in.
The first few miles of the trail are in immaculate condition, hiking steadily uphill. The second half of the trail could use some TLC. Hasn't been brushed in quite a few years, but nothing too dramatic to push through.
Views from Tank Verde Peak are spectacular. Very nice up there.
We decided to hike the extra 5 miles to complete the entire Tanque Verde trail ending at Cow Saddle. A bigger drop to the saddle from the peak than we were expecting. Getting back up to the peak area took quite a bit of energy.
The return from there is mostly downhill fortunately as we were getting tired and temps were rising.
We finished up just after our water ran out in the heat of the day. We spent a few hours rehydrating after.
Great hike. Thanks for joining me, Kelly! :)

saturday's hike was tanque verde peak and ridge
we got going around 0530 from the picnic area
steady uphill from the beginning
moderate grade on good trail for about four or five miles, then some rolling hills on an easier grade until a steeper approach to the peak
good trail and scenic terrain the entire hike
we went up to the peak and took a short break
back at the ridge trail, we decided to go on to cow head saddle
more of a drop than we thought there might be, and coming back up from there was a bit of a grind
that left nine miles mostly downhill, with three or four little uphills on the return
took a snack break at around fifteen miles once we ditched the gnats and found some shade
long day with a good helping of elevation gain - my biggest hike of the year so far
the hike was more difficult due to temps in the nineties and the extra aeg from cow head saddle
really liked tanque verde peak
great views of the surrounding mountains from the ridgeline
even though dry, lots of vegetation
saw a few deer and an eastern collared lizard
finished up around 1330 and spent some time rehydrating with ice water and na beers :)
great choice, john, thanks!

Working on the Rincon trails in SNP. Put together a huge loop. Highlight is the Tanque Verde ridge trail between Cow Head Saddle and TV Peak. WOW - sensational views.

Felt really good and had perfect weather for a big day in the Rincons

Having discovered this trail I’m like a cat with a new toy.

Today they waived entrance fees to the park so it was busy. Fortunately it thins out pretty quick after the first half mile on the trail.

I’d hoped I might get to Juniper Basin. I got to within 45 minutes of it, but was running a bit low on both time and water to continue. I could’ve pushed it but would have been nursing my water bottle on the way back and probably getting back to the car after dark. So I turned back a hill or two shy. I shall return!

On the way up I’d passed a trio of backpackers heading down. They’d started at Javelina picnic area a couple days prior, hiked through the park to Douglas Spring trail, went up to Cow Head Saddle and on down TV Ridge. They had to carry all their water as there was none the whole route. :o

First time on this trail. It’s really nice. Hiked to a good viewpoint around sunset. The views of Rincon Valley and Tucson are pretty sweet, though the sunset that day was kinda meh. Back to the car at last light.

This is one of those hikes I have done multiple times and dread doing it. Usually coming down from Mica Mountain through Cow Head Saddle then over Tanque Verde Peak and down the ridge. Those 8 downs and ups coming down the ridge can really irritate you especially when you're tired. But in spite of all that I continue doing it. It's kind of like beating your head with a hammer , it feels so good when you stop. We hiked up to Juniper Basin which was posted as 6.9 miles and I recorded 7.03. enjoyed the scenery and views from along the ridge. Box Canyon to the south of the trail looks inviting and I keep saying some day I will explore it. Probably not passable without doing some intense rock scrambling and maybe skirting the creek in places. I have explored the lower portion of the canyon years ago but the park service says it is off limits because there are no trails there (no cross country allowed below 4500 feet). Probably because of the Hohokam ruins in that lower canyon.

Great views especially after the exiting storm. Didn't drop much rain here, only water we saw was two tiny pools ( less than 2 inches across) that collected in rock pockets. Dry everywhere else. No one on the trail except along the first mile or two of trail. Saw two white tail deer on our return trip. A few of the old metal trail markers that were quite common in the 60's to mark trails in the Rincons are still present in the Juniper Basin area nailed to old dead Junipers. No longer bright orange though.

Took a 30 minute break at Juniper basin then headed back. Back down the ridge with those 8 dreaded downs then ups, over 500 feet of AEG on those suckers.

The trail was in very good shape. We started out in cooler weather around 39 degrees. It was supposed to get up to 55 degrees with a little breeze. Very pleasant hiking weather and it was so clear in the morning. The views are beautiful. Mark and I could see a lot of the landmarks of places we have hiked or streets we use in town. It was very dry with only one area that must have gotten recent moisture as evidenced by clear pools in small depressions in the rock. I was really wowed by Juniper Basin. Such a tranquil place for a break. Beautiful area to enjoy. On the way back we spotted two whitetail does. They looked healthy. This hike is definitely a workout. Mostly going downhill I thought. It works so many different muscles! Very enjoyable day and we stopped at Saguaro Corners for dinner. I have to admit that the craft beer I had with dinner was a nice reward for a long hike:).

Another hike up Tanque Verde Ridge, this time with my grandson John. John wanted to go on a hike and he just got new boots so we thought a close by hike would be Tanque Verde Ridge. We went up 2 miles before turning around, the sun would be setting soon. Slightly overcast so no spectacular sunset but the setting sun did illuminate the clouds a bit.

Black Friday hike with my nephew Greg who traveled from Albuquerque for Thanksgiving at my daughter's. My first time hiking this trail. Very nice trail, good scenery, and great workout. Worthy of a repeat.
We hiked about half the trail before turning back. Beautiful day. :)

Short hike around sunset in the Rincon Mountains of Saguaro National Park. The Tanque Verde Ridge Trail is always a good bet around sunset. Only went up about 1.5 miles before having to turn around. I thought the sunset was nothing spectacular but then I live in Arizona and our standards are higher. The trail is in good condition, at least the short portion of it that we did. I assume the rest is also in good condition, it usually is the few times I have headed up to Tanque Verde Peak. Really long trail though.

Met up with Matt at the trailhead around 0615 and got started. Cool temps to start, which felt nice on the uphill climb, which was nearly relentless. After about three miles, we went through a series of short ups and downs on the trail. No big deal on the way up, but I knew I would not be enjoying that section on the return.

The vegetation turned from desert to juniper as we continued uphill. Took a snack break at Juniper Basin, then continued towards the summit. The trail seemed steeper after Juniper Basin. It was about a 10’ scramble up the large boulder at the summit. Excellent 360 degree views from the boulder. Took another break, then headed back down. I wasn’t thrilled about climbing back down off the boulder, but the rock was grippy. Matt was reassuring, with “That’s okay, it’s not a long fall.”

The hike back down was uneventful, and a tad boring at times. Saw a few other hikers. Made it through the rollercoaster in the middle without too much complaining. Full sun, but a nice breeze kept things tolerable. We were treated to the air show at Davis Monthan AFB for the final few miles of the hike. Good to see Matt again!

Met up with Linda just before sunrise to knock off a peak and gain some altitude. We picked this one a) because most other peaks down south are iced over, and b) this one is a cooker if the weather isn't just right - much better when cold. Today, the conditions couldn't have been better with temps most of the way between 40 & 50, though we did endure some 60 to 65 in the last hour or so.

This one can be uneventful in the lower 6 miles, but we pretty much chatted those away and they were gone quick enough. Once we hit Juniper Basin CG, we took a snack break before pushing out the final couple of miles. We made the final leg in short order and had the peak to ourselves. In fact, we hadn't seen anyone prior to or after the campground on the trip up. Views were excellent in all directions, despite the haze, so we sat snapping pics before the long trip back. The descent was just like the ascent, in that we chatted it away and soon enough, we were back to the parking lot.

It was really good to see Linda again - it had been a bit. We always have good conversation and a compatible pace, so always nice to hike with her. Thanks for driving down!

I went on another hike today, this one close to home in Saguaro National Park. This is one of those trails I have done multiple times. The first time when I was in high school coming down from Mica Mountain for a 16 mile hike. I have done the same trek multiple other times and each time I swore I would never do it again. This hike was a little different because I started from below and headed up but only to Juniper Basin. Round trip it was 13.3 mile with 3600 feet of accumulated elevation gain. Funny how time makes you forget just how grueling this trail is.

Enough griping though, actually it was a very scenic hike on a crystal clear cool day. There are views of almost all the mountains in southern Arizona. I don’t know if it is the continuous uphill climb that wears on my mind or if it is the fact that you climb up to a high point just to realize there is another high point but you have to drop down a little before heading up to the next high point. Repeat this numerous times. I tried counting these events but I always loose track. Good views looking down into Box Canyon. Very few people on the trail only 4 after you get in a ways. There was a bit of snow on the north facing slopes at the higher elevations. The streams in and around Juniper Basin all had some water flowing. Great hike even though my knees are complaining a bit, the 6 .7 miles of downhill was harder than the 6.7 up. Felt good to get out on a more strenuous hike with some AEG, it has been a while since I had done that, I was beginning to wonder if I still had it in me but I think I could still pull off a few more. Maybe the Hieroglyphics to the flat Iron after my last failed attempt.

This was my first trip into the Rincon section of Saguaro National Park, and it was a beautiful one.

The morning started out an hour later than planned as I left the trailhead at 9am and the temperature was already approaching 90. I immediately noticed the stunning amount of green vegetation and wildflowers as I pushed my way up through the heat. After two miles I took a break under a large saguaro and swapped my capilene T for a sun hoody and hat, two things that I should have been wearing right from the start.

The first 5 miles of the trail are a long a steady climb up easy-to-follow single track. Once I made it into Juniper Basin I lost the trail a few times due to overgrowth and crossings over exposed rock. Some well-placed cairns and Caltopo aided me through the last 1.5 miles into camp. There was a strong flow in the seasonal creek running alongside Juniper Basin campground and while it didn't look perfectly clear after passing through my filter, it tasted great after the hot hike up. The campsite has three designated sites. 2 and 3 are relatively close to each other, while 1 is a bit more secluded. There are bearboxes available for food storage and a gnarly pit toilet as well.

My initial plan was to continue on to Grass Shack for the following night, however the amount of gnats that I encountered at Juniper Basin was so intense that I decided to cut the trip short and head back down Tanque Verde Ridge early Sunday morning. Another couple at the campsite made the same call. The return hike was predictably much more enjoyable than the climb up the previous day. Leaving camp shortly before 6 kept things cool and the descent allowed me to really pick up the pace as the prospect of an unplanned breakfast burrito loomed over my head.

I can't wait to return in the fall and make it deeper into the mountains when both the bug pressure and temperatures drop. I was very glad to have seen the spoils of the monsoon rains though, so the trip was well worth it.

Along for the ride on this one, but helped suggest the route. I had been to Tanque Verde Peak 5 years back, when I thought I could do it in the spring with a 16oz handheld, and had one of my most memorable running-out-of-water experiences. (Technically I was right, I was able to do it with just 16oz).

Good waterfalls below Grass Shack. Would like to get closer sometime. Up on Cowhead Saddle, we ran into the first hiker since leaving Hope Camp Trail. Rest of the way up the peak was fine, a little bit of snow left, was expecting much more.

Filled up water at Juniper Basin - water was much better than the larvae-infested murk I had to use to wet my mouth on the earlier TVP experience. Saw a solo backpacker there who said he was on his way to Manning Camp - it was already 3pm, not sure he knew what he was getting into.

Good day, tougher route than expected.

I started out in the dark, at 6:30 a.m., with an old backpacking buddy who lives very close to this trail. She had to start her "work from home" at 8, so she had only forty minutes to hike. Nonetheless, it was fun to see her again and hike with her. When she turned around I continued on. I saw the sun rise over the side of Rincon Peak. Then the trail dipped behind a hill, and I was in the cold shade again. I turned around in a sunny saddle, which has views toward the Santa Ritas.

Looking toward the city as the sun rose, it was interesting to see the giant shadow the Rincon Mountains made, all across the valley.

I'll be living in Tucson through early March, so I hope to be hiking a lot of places I somehow missed when I actually had a home here, raised my family here. This trail was one of those I had never set foot on before. Since I used to live more on the NW side of town, the Rincons seemed to be way out in Timbuktu. Now that I'm on the far east side, I can easily access them. Far east, man!

It's great to be back. For over 30 years, Tucson has felt like home to me, even though I haven't lived here for the past 21 years. I've visited often, and have many friends here.

Send me dead flowers every morning.
Send me dead flowers by the mail.
Send me dead flowers to my wedding.
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave.

Another short late afternoon hike. We wanted to hike up the Tanque Verde Ridge Trail just before sunset and catch the sunset on the way down. This was a good workout hike with a good amount of AEG. The hike back was filled with Oohs and ahs as the sun was setting. The bonus was that the moon was rising at the same time. Can't get much more of a full moon than that. We arrived back at the car after dark but the moon helped light the trail.

This trail is not one of my favorite, most of the time it is my route back from Mica Mountain. Seems to go on forever. It is not my choice of trails to hike up to Mica Mountain, There are plenty of other easier routes up (although none of them are easy). The desert was dry and the cactus showed it. a couple of ocotillos had leaves on them so they must of received some water from the last rain. Only saw a hand full of people on the trail but then it was toward the end of the day.
