After having a short conversation with Tracy on FB due to my out of control phone, we decided to get together for a hike and Diane joined us. I have no idea when the last time the three of us hiked together but I'm thinking it was Prescott or Flagstaff. Anyway, neither of them had hiked Deem Hills, my suggestion, so Tracy rounded us up and we met at the East TH a little before 9. Diane is limited on her hiking due to her knee (being replaced May 1) so I adjusted our route.

We mostly stuck on the northern Circumference Trail and Diane opted to add the Ridgeline Trail and actually led the way. It was a lovely morning for a hike as we started north to warm up. We hiked up the interior and encountered a couple hikers along the way is all. We complained about the lack of color this year, even no brittlebush blooms :( . We got to the intersection with the Basalt Trail and gave Diane her choices and she said, let's go to the saddle and take the Ridgleine.

The Ridgeline is a little rockier than I like but Diane and Tracy hustled up the mountain and fortunately, took a couple short breaks. Soon we hit the switchback that takes you to the west saddle. This view caused us all to talk about how much the valley has grown since we've been here and basically agreed, this is not the Phoenix we initially knew and loved.

We finished our short climb and hiked over to the north side which I think provides such a beautiful view to the east. And now it was time to head down which always seems to take longer, but one can't complain as the grade makes it not so hard; except for the rocks they like to put on the trail for erosion control.

Once we got to the intersection we had the option to go back around the way we came or continue north down the trail and to the road. We chose to continue north, except.... the trail down to the road wasn't until we hiked to the NW side of the Circumference Trail; not quite how I remembered it  . We enjoyed our road walk back to the trail to take us to where we started.

It was a great day for the hike and to get semi-caught up. We then went over to Sauce in Happy Valley to celebrate Tracy's retirement... speaking of Phoenix's growth.

Ocotillo were blooming. Saw some desert senna trying to regrow. Creosote also had blooms and cotton balls.

The Deem Hills trails are only a couple miles away from my friends' home from college in Oregon.
Kelly and I hiked both of the major Deem Hills hikes. The Circumference Trail and the inner figure eight.
Nice temps all morning. A few more folks out than expected for a Friday.
Homemade breakfast after. Good day! Thanks Kelly. :)

it's been a couple years since we were up at deem hills
set out at 0700 on the circumference trail
back at the trailhead, took the water tank road to access the inner loop
about a mile into that, came up on a gal sitting on the ground
she wouldn't answer when i asked if she was okay, but she looked spent
i gave her buddy my water since we only had about an hour left and they didn't have any
we passed them near the finish and at least she was moving
had it been any warmer, might not have been a good ending
we saw a few other people and one girl walking her mountain bike uphill
beautiful day, good to do something different
stopped to see john's friends after - nice visit and breakfast
thanks john, good times :)

wore the altra experience wild trail runners today, which was a good test
wider toe box, better cushioning than the la sportiva bushidos
good traction, very comfortable
better for the ankle tendon thing i've had for a few months

#greatness

Decided to get away from the normal hiking spots. Covered almost all of the Deem Hills area.
Lots of globe chamomile and brittlebush in bloom with owl clover, globemallow et al thrown in for contrast.
Ran into @rcorfman as we thought we might. Good to see you Russ.
Got a little warm by the time we finished.
Treated to breakfast at some friends after. Good day. :)

I decided to hit up another one of the parks I used to do when I lived in the West Valley.

Thought I could get this one done before my after lunch meeting (Who am I fooling. I don't have meetings anymore. More like a nap)

The rain had stopped but it was a bit muddy in spots.
Temps were perfect.

Brittlebush is the major player here with Fiddleneck, Scorpionweed, Blue Richards, Lupine, Globemallow and my first sighting of Owl Clover this year.

Only 3 others passed while I was hiking.

Second outing in Deem Hills with my buddy Gene. He felt much better this time. Last hike was the morning after he got both a covid booster and shingles shot.
Weather was cloudy with a good breeze and a few raindrops. Not a lot of people out hiking for a Saturday. Good times. :)

Hiked with Gene, a college buddy of mine who lives nearby. We saw three coyotes in the parking lot as we arrived. Walked up on a great horned owl and saw another twice in flight. Great weather and views of hot air balloons. :)

Wanted to do an afternoon hike today thinking it might be hard to get parking in the AM and crowded on the trails. So after my nap😉, I headed out to the Deem Hills East parking lot that had only three cars in it. You can now go directly from Happy Valley Rd as construction is finished (probably has been finished for awhile, I just haven't been to Deem since January.) The route I had selected had several options that I could choose.

I started counterclockwise on the Circumference Trail. I enjoyed looking at the tall basalt rock fields though not in good enough light for a picture. Eventually you are parallel with the canal before heading south up a long easy grade toward the saddle. I encountered one bike rider on this part of the route. As you get toward the top you have the option to crossover to the west and catch the trail to the Ridgeline that way but I opted for the Basalt Trail that takes you to the top of the saddle.

I headed WNW on the Ridgeline Trail and probably encountered about 1/2 dozen hikers; four that I would see on the west side of the Circumference Trail. This does make a nice loop altho I do find the rocky trail annoying; still can't get past the fear of falling since my January accident. However, on this whole hike I only tripped 3 times so that's not bad. I am sure I always tripped at least that much before but now I notice every time :( .

It was nice up on the Ridgeline with views all around. I made my way back down to join back up with the Circumference Trail. I saw about 4 hikers on this part of the route until I got over by the west side where the Deem Hills Recreational Park is located. They have a restroom there which is just a hop, skip and jump from the trail if you have the need. Or you can hang out at the Park. I think I may check it out the next time I'm here. There is also ample parking if the east trailhead parking is full.

I continued on the Circumference Trail and started the slow grade up the south side of the Deem Hills. I actually passed a couple gals but I think only because they were busy talking. The last little bit up to the saddle I was at earlier does get a bit steep. From here a person can continue south of the hills or go up and around to the north which was my choice today... I had a beer waiting  .

I took the Basalt Trail and eventually hooked up with the Palisade Trail. These trails split off and you can go either left or right. I thot I took the path I had taken in the past but I ended up on the Palisade Trail that takes you north and down from the Deem Hills... which I didn't know but I wasn't too worried about where it might dump me as the TH was not far away. It was nice to be on a new trail and it might be an interesting option to come up for a loop in the future.

The Palisade Trail ends up at the paved road that goes to the flat water tank, however, you go right (east) to get back to the TH. There was some photography going on of some very nicely dressed people as I passed by the open road gate. Not sure it was the best background and later I saw one of the subjects actually walking in her heels back to the TH while I was sitting in Tonto 3. Why on earth would she have not walked to that area in sneakers or something  ? Saw 1/2 dozen lizards throughout the hike.

I had my Huckleberry beer, caught up on texts and FB before heading back home.

Since I wussed out of an overnite AZT event due to the forecast, I had to pick a hike to do and this was it. Did I miss somewhere about how cool an area this is to hike? I looked thru previous trip reports and only a couple mentioned how lovely it is out here. I did learn that in the trip reports, it's better NOT to hike here when the snakes can dominate the Hills. I did see lots of former HAZers in the trip reports too; wonder where they are now?

It was warmer than I thot it was supposed to be but it didn't feel like the temperature. Besides, it was an overcast day which means, no sunglasses or a hat and that's a big deal in my book. I arrived at the east TH where there were still 3 spots available to park out of the dozen or so available spots.

I started up toward the hills and noticed right away that it is a pretty rocky trail. It was a nice up as Ups go. The scenery even at this level was not what I expected as I thot it would be like the Phx Sonoran Preserves but it's different, mostly because of all that basalt. And there is a lot in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

I eventually got over to the other side of the mountain and to an intersection. I had the route loaded but I couldn't tell which way it went first. I opted for the Up route on the east side of the hill. It's a bit roly poly and a bit rocky. And by rocky I mean the rocks are stuck into the dirt. Soon you get a good visual of the canal and I could look across to the Phx Sonoran Preserve. The breeze had picked up so that was nice.

From there it was down the hill and switching occasionally to join up with the original intersection that I had done a bit of a circle before picking my route. And even here I wasn't sure as the route on RS looked like it was covering ground I had already been on so I dropped down over the south side and more or less went east. This is the side where you see all the houses but you are looking east so you don't pay them much mind. The hillside was dotted with lots of basalt with desert flora sprouting between all of the rocks. You can see the trail stretched out before you and once you come up slightly out of the bowl I headed west and north eventually, after deciding no to a couple other trail options, with the Circumference Trail.

My route was Circumference, Palisade, Circumference, Palisade, Circumference. No wonder I was a little confused :-k . As usual I opted to go a little higher rather than the lower trail before I hooked up with the trail back to my waiting Huckleberry beer and buffalo stick. I saw about 7 hikers and 4 dogs; that's it. One of the hikers even laughed at my, what's that grey stuff in the sky observation. Anyway, I'll be adding this to my hiking repertoire except during snake season.

I did take a few too many photos but being as this was a first time hike of this area, it stands to reason. I also tried out using Video Pro on my phone. I put together a movie and included these and other photos: [ youtube video ] and I used music by HAZ's LosDosSloFolks (thank you).

WATCH: 4.79 miles (so gps. must not have locked in right away) in 2:13:25 at 2.1 avg MPH (1543 - 2072 feet), avg bpm 130, max 156 (37 min in Zone 5 max, 44 min zone 4, 51 zone 3), burned 888 calories, 72.8 degrees with 19% humidity at 10:08 AM Huckleberry beer time.

I am not sure if the trail I took has an official name. Part Circumference/ Part Inner Figure eight. Regardless a great hike that started at 4:00 PM. Trail itself is pretty rocky - glad I wore hiking boots. Wild flowers are out, yellow, orange and purple. Between the flowers and weeds, parts of the trail has overgrowth from the sides making the possibility of getting scratch. Saw plenty of lizards and one chipmunk? but thankfully no snakes. These trails are usually less busier then Thunderbird.

First time to this area. Judy and I did the hike counter clockwise out of the parking lot. Only two cars in the lot at 9 AM on a Tuesday. Only negative is that the trail in many areas is rocky. I want to go back to do the Ridgeline Trail as to day we did the Circumference Trail as a figure eight.

Never been here before, and was staying at my girlfriend's house who lives a cannon's shot away, so decided to check it out. There were lots of letters, but I remembered my friend telling me to stay to the right, so we followed the 'C' trail until we hit a small parking lot at the bottom of a hill. I decided to turn around and go back up. From there, we hit the 'P', the 'B', and the 'R' trails. We kinda looped all around, which is what I think part of what we did is when people post about the figure 8 loop, so I added that as a link.

Did a slightly modified version of the Deem Hills Inner Figure Eight this morning. There must have been a hot air balloon fest going on this morning because I counted 18 balloons to the north. There was an odd Ford Mustang in the lot this morning when I got there (I was the first one there beside this Mustang). It was parked perpendicular to the parking spaces and across from the parking spaces. I didn't see anyone in the vehicle and it was still there at the end of my hike. Creepy! Anyway, started on the Circumference Trail and headed south to the Basalt Trail, then hopped on Palisades east back to Circumference to Ridgeline to Circumference again to Basalt/Palisades to the water res road back to the trailhead. Nice to get out for a longer morning quickie with some decent elevation.

Pretty warm for a mid-winter day. So time to work up a little sweat. Has been years since I last hiked Deem Hills. Used to live just south but moved about the time the trails were being cut into this park. Trails are in good shape. A surprising number of people were hiking and biking today.
