Quick visit to Parker Canyon Overlooks on our first afternoon / evening, then onto Sawmill Dispersed Camp for two nights stay. Some more aggressive plans were shelved due to snow levels, it was enough to be a potential hazard on steep off trail terrain, and not enough to safely cover rocks & fallen logs for easy walking.

Parker Canyon (160) had light snow near the top.

McFadden Horse Mountain was pretty socked in, including the XC cut to the arch.

Workman springs road looked fine at the bottom, there was a fallen tree on the road but there was room for a vehicle to pass. I imagine it's a muddy mess further up.

Reynolds Creek FR looked really muddy.

The camp area near honey creek divide / FR3222 had a large ice or mud puddle depending on time of day leading to it.

Parking for McFadden Horse Mountain was mostly covered in snow.

288 from ~Rose Creek lodge to McFadden mountain FR had a handful of icy spots. All were fine dropping speed and playing it safe, and were where you'd expect them to be.

First night hit 21F - luckily that's within the range of our shoulder season alpine gear (0F bag, 10F bag, R5 sleeping pads, etc). Most campsites were snow free and non-soggy. Cleaned up quite a bit of trash from the site, including a shotgun shell, some clay duck bits, and 9mm shells within a few feet of a fire ring. :/

2023-02-10: FR203, FR329, FR2801

After a chilly morning we headed out to the intersection of FR203 and 288. We parked across from FR203 near some trashed campsites (what looked like industrial parts had been shoveled out of a fire ring currently full of half melted plastic and burnt metal) and went for a walk down FR203. Cherry Creek has caught my imagination since seeing it from the ridge of McFadden Horse Mountain, so why not.

Despite the warnings at the cattle guard, the road was in great shape (for a Sierra Ancha 4x4) down to FR329 with some great views up top of McFadden Horse and its nearby terrain - always fun to mentally map a previous XC route onto something in the distance. Shortly after the big switch down we came across FR2801, which didn't show up on any maps we had. Upon hitting FR329 we pondered our choices and decided to aim for some of the drainages up-canyon. The road was again in fairly solid shape, passing a cattle gate and a spring fed trough in a cattle pen, until it hit the bottom of FR2801.

The road got rougher, true 4x4 after that, though still pleasant to walk with a lot of dirt to cushion steps. Shortly after the spring (fed into a trough with some old metal gating around the original spring dismantled) is FR2803 heading north with a load of warnings. I wasn't able to pull up any information for private parcels in that area that'd be ahead, but on the way back we used it to cross the creek then cutting west to follow a series of old camps leads to an old path to the abandoned mine in that area. We didn't go up to the adits or tailings themselves, but there was some interesting old rusty industrial stuff below that was interesting. Some kind of kilns, and what looked like simple sorting machines for kibble along with some finer sieves. It all seemed pretty inert, but we didn't poke around into the old charcoal.

FR2805 could easily be missed, and cuts south just before Ash Creek, which seemed like it could be a worthwhile wander. We chose to push onwards instead, but only made it FR2086 (and the nearby Olliger Mesa Tank again feeding into a trough inside a pen) before deciding it wasn't prudent to try and reach the end of FR2086 where it dropped down to Cherry Creek. Short days and a late start, ce la vie.

To save time heading back we simply went up FR2081, which was incredibly pleasant for the first bit then hit the worst walking terrain of the day, baseball to grapefruit sized rocks similar the ones on the way to DuPonte Cabin (though not as bad).

While not as epic as the lower part of the canyon, if someone had a 4x4 it'd be an interesting place to poke around. Lots of cow droppings here and there, so care taken with water sources etc. No signs of fire damage encountered.

2023-02-11: FR152 (mostly non-existent) / Rose Creek

We were debating going up McFadden (non-horse) Mountain, or cutting to some of the old roads that lead to prospects above the north fork of Parker creek, but decided to check out an old road from Sawmill Flats Dispersed Camp because it was there. It quickly faded (after some overly optimistic tracks) and swung from an old road, to single track, to fading and coming back again. Easy enough to follow and there was some white flagging on limbs here and there to help out. A LOT of deadfall, and the ever present New Mexico Thorndickweeds after a fire. Thankfully not as dense as some of the stuff around Aztec Mountain, and it wasn't an issue, but still annoying. We reached the end of the canyon where the old road petered out... and there wasn't much. It'd be useful as an approach to Armer mountain I suppose, as there was a lot of semi-open forest, but faced with the choice of bushwhacking or postholing with current conditions we called it and headed back.

We decided to beat pre-Superbowl evening traffic (which is a pooeyshow even without a massive event) and just head back to metro PHX. A bit of a let down trip for a favorite area, but it was good to get out and we didn't see a single person aside from an OHV convoy alongside Parker Canyon. So that's a win!

I decided to do this loop to get a workout and to check out the wildflowers in the area.

I definitely got a workout going up the Deer Ridge Trail to Camp Grasshopper. There were quite a few flowers to see along the trail, and I also saw a gopher snake in the trail.

Going down the South Fork Trail was slow going. The trail is not easy to follow, but thankfully there were quite a few cairns which were helpful. There was water running along much of the South Fork, but the flow is less than what I have seen in other years. Wildflowers were nice in a one mile stretch of the South Fork Trail, about a mile from the TH. Owl clover is only about 3-4 inches high though.

I enjoy this hike in late winter or early spring, so I decided to do it today. The hike was not as enjoyable as normal due to high temperatures, lower than normal water flow in the south fork of deer creek, and almost no wildflowers.

On the plus side, the South Fork Trail was in pretty good shape, and was much easier to follow than on my prior hikes on the trail.

I went up the Gold Ridge Trail, stopped at Camp Grasshopper for a break, and then came on the South Fork Trail.

This hike is a good workout, and I enjoyed the hike even though the conditions weren't as good as normal.

First time back into the Mazzies since spring, hopefully my last hike in the 90s for the year. Ended up road walking to Peeley to get a glimpse of the fall color up there and enjoy the breezy autumn weather in the pines.

Started around sunrise, first one there. Impressive herd mooed good morning and scattered into the hills. Gold Ridge in great shape, those mountain bikers do good work.

Camp Grasshopper only signs of human life on the day. Two tents, one pitched at the last campsite and one along the way. Road's clear and rerouted around the last deadfall.

Walked to S Fork upper TH and felt like maybe I'd take a shot at Peeley. Been nursing a heel injury for two weeks and decided against it. Ate lunch at the TH and admired the even turn of the oaks. One of the best oak showings I've seen. Gold in color, even turn all along the 201. Maple Draw prime maples with yellow oaks mixed in.

Real autumn show was South Fork. Good maples up and down; many were deep or dull red, and a lot were a cherry blossom pink. Bright gold oaks and riparian trees complemented nicely. Better than expected, good color pretty much all the way down. Flowing water for much of S Fork. Comes and goes but reliably there.

Saw no hikers on the day. Lots of cows, birds of terrific colors and songs, and a tarantula. Only car at DC start and finish.

Pretty constant. Terrific oak display from Grasshopper to Peeley. S Fork is the show, good maples and mix of colors. Cold snap coming soon and will wind autumn down quickly.

Really a Gold Ridge - Peeley - Deer Creek route but I wanted continuity with a hike I did in January when I wasn't able to get it all done counterclockwise. There are a few advantages to taking the loop clockwise. I think there's about 400ft less elevation gained. Maybe this is just a personal preference, but Gold Ridge is prettiest at sunrise as Deer Creek is in the light of day. DC is cooler than GR during the middle and later parts of the day, and obviously there's water all the way down. Gave it a second go, starting a quarter before 6am.

Gold Ridge is as usual in just about perfect shape. Good wildflower display on the lower and middle portions of trail. The deadfall has been cleared off the upper parts of the trail. Camp Grasshopper is clear for high clearance and good tires.

Saw the first people on the Divide Trail, a trio of backpackers. East slopes of Peeley the day started to feel warm. Cooled off under the pines on the north side and on the summit. Terrific visibility that turned hazier as increasing wind blew distant smoke around to the south. Plus the Phoenix haze that not even a state of emergency and stay at home orders can lift from the city.

Saw the second and last person on the day at the upper Deer Creek trailhead. Headed down the sharp grade and took a break at Gowan Camp. Good flow of water in Deer Creek and the wildflowers were constant. Water wasn't very cold and didn't help much cooling off. Trail has more deadfall than in January, and the grasses have grown in over the trail in parts. Route's easy to find, and there are regular cairns. Trail is noticeably warmer from the grave site to the trailhead.

Ended up around 90 degrees when I finished. The water and wildflower situation is at peak but probably on the way down, week or two to be worth much. There was a small brush fire at the Sycamore Creek turn off opposite the one to Four Peaks on the way back to Phoenix.

I did this hike 5 days ago and liked it so much that I decided to do it again. Last time I did the hike solo, but this time I met 3 friends at the TH. Normally we would have carpooled to the TH, but in this era of social distancing, we each drove to the TH.

The hike was similar to last week: the climb up on the Gold Ridge Trail was a tough one; break time at Camp Grasshopper was a winner; and the descent on the South Fork Trail was a lot of fun.

There was still a good bit of water running in the South Fork of Deer Creek, but it seemed to me to be a bit less than last week. Wildflowers on the lower portion of the South Fork Trail are amAZing right now!

We saw one person on the Gold Ridge Trail, and he was doing trail maintenance. On the South Fork Trail we met 2 people about 1.5 miles from the TH. Other than that, we had the trails to ourselves!

Wildflowers were moderate on the Gold Ridge Trail; were close to non-existent on the upper portion of the South Fork Trail; but were substantial if not extreme on the lower portion of the South Fork Trail. The owl clover, stemless primrose, fleabane, and desert marigold were definite winners!

It had been about a year since I had done this hike, and it seemed like a good one to do in this era of "social distancing".

I encountered 3 people on the hike: a guy doing trail maintenance on the Gold Ridge Trail; and 2 people on the South Fork Trail not too far from the trailhead.

I did the hike by going up the Gold Ridge Trail, and then coming down South Fork. The first mile on Gold Ridge is at a relaxed uphill grade and is a good warmup; but the next 2.5-3.0 miles are a steep butt-kicker. The trail is in pretty good shape though and has mostly been well-maintained. I don't think that they have done any maintenance on South Fork recently, and it seemed in worse shape when I hike it last about a year ago. For me, the going was a bit slow for the first 4 miles or so on South Fork.

There was a good bit of water flowing on South Fork, which made that portion of the hike enjoyable.

I enjoy this hike, and right now is a good time of year to do it.

In some sections of the hike I'd say that the wildflowers were "subtantial", but in other sections they were non-existent, which is why I rated it "moderate". There was a wide variety of flowers though.

Solid uphill on Gold Ridge Trail #47 with some great views. We took a break near the top which was 20 degrees cooler than the lowlands below. First time on Gold Ridge trail and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality tread even though it’s quite steep in the middle section.

After the break we hiked over to the start of South Fork Trail #46 and headed down canyon. A few patches of snow at the very top to spice things up. Once in the drainage it was flowing and never let up all the way down. Some very nice pools along the way and on a warmer day a dip would have been a certainty. Lots of trail work has been done since my last trip into South Fork which made it much easier hike and follow. Kudos to the trail crew who put in the time and effort to bring back the trail!!

got an invite from chums to hike this loop
kyle and karl came along, too
all new trails for me, so it sounded great
especially the part about south fork having some maintenance done recently
got going mid morning
deer creek to gold ridge, then a sustained climb of 3k in 6 miles
topped out on 201 near camp grasshopper, where we took a break
down peeley road, then a drop into south fork
very scenic with flowing water the entire way
trail was flagged and cairned and easy enough to follow
a few creek crossings, a few downed trees, and some steep bits getting away from and back down to the creek
kept things interesting :)
but nice to have the last couple miles be easy ones
temps were good for this, although it was breezy up high
nicely sheltered in the creek
good to hike with chums, kyle and karl again, and meet lily - what a sweetheart
thanks for the invite, guys

Solid gold. Good climb. I forgot it's really only 2,000 feet in 2 miles, and the other 4 miles are very enjoyable. A little breezy at the top made the otherwise nice temps a tit nipply at Camp Grasshopper.

South Fork is in pretty good shape. No problems finding the route at all, but still some lingering deadfall. Maybe 15 trees to cross on the descent? Well-cairned but could use some tread work on a few of the crossings that have a some steep and loose descents to the creek. Water flowing the whole way, top to bottom.

Busy day. Saw a solo backpacker and a friendly face with three pups.

I had heard Deer Creek was worked on recently, so I made my first trip all the way up. Original plan was to take Deer Creek and South Fork in a loop, but on the way up I decided to try to get on top of Peeley. Ended up without enough energy and patience and took Gold Ridge down because I thought it's the easier route.

Started at 8, no one at the trailhead. Deer Creek was as expected in great shape up to entering the creek just past the wilderness boundary. Unexpectedly, apart from about two dozen downed trees the trail was clear and well cairned the whole way beyond that point as well. Very little brush to push through. Gets better as it goes up and enters the pines, especially around and above Gowan Camp. Good flow of water, but not enough to get wet.

Made it to Peeley trailhead and went to pull something to eat out of my pack before the final push to the peak. Realized I had forgotten to pack anything. Lacking energy, I slowly pushed on until I left the trail around the north side of the peak to start my way up. Decided to get a jump start on heading back and finding something to eat instead of getting to the summit 500 feet above. Wanted to salvage any enjoyment the rest of the hike could give me rather than burn out 12 miles from my car, 3,800 feet up in the mountains.

Painful walk back up the 201 to Camp Grasshopper. There's a big tree that has fallen over the road and probably needs some cutting to remove. Took a long break watching the clouds roll in before heading back down. Made it back with little to spare and saw the first people on the day at the trailhead.

Wanted to get one last big hike in this year but was a little pressed for time, so instead of trying to come up Deer Creek I took the veritable highway Gold Ridge Trail out and back on a trip up Mount Peeley. I had hiked and driven every stretch of this route independently before, but it still impressed.

Got to the trailhead at dawn, and two bow hunters were just about to start their day. Went up to Gold Ridge hoping they weren't headed that way, but they were. Bummer for those guys. Didn't see any deer anyway, so maybe not.

Started the climb up Gold Ridge and the trail was recently worked. Brush is trimmed and the surface is the least slippery I can remember it. After the main ascent on Gold Ridge at about 3.5 miles the A1 Mazatzal views reveal themselves and don't let up for the rest of the trip to the summit.

There is a fallen tree blocking the upper trailhead at the end of 3348 where the best campsites are. Not sure it'd take much to move it.

201 is a beautiful necessary evil: not a huge fan of hiking roads, but the views into the heart of the Mazatzals render this moot. Plus with the dense pines there remains some of the pre-Willow beauty. Only people I saw all day were four gentlemen driving to the Peeley TH and then on to the Sunflower Mine. Chatted for a bit, took their picture, and headed up.

Took the Mazatzal Divide Trail around to the north side of the peak to avoid shorter but steeper and brushier alternatives. Hazy views toward the city, and the sun washed out the views to the south, but just about perfect weather on top.

Headed back down the way I came and hurried back to the city. Few trees down on the upper end of Gold Ridge and on the Maz. Divide Trail, but otherwise the trip was obstacle free.

Needed a close hike and wanted a backcountry feel, and with the Superstitions not an option the Mazatzals fit the bill. Decided to keep it simple and did Gold Ridge out and back.

Started a half hour before sunrise to the howl of coyotes. There were a lot of tracks, scat, and a little fur on the trail, but I only saw two white tail deer before climbing the ridge and a grey fox near the upper trailhead.

The upper trailhead was shady and breezy. Camp Grasshopper is a special place in the summer.

The Woodbury fire was visible from the part of the trail where views of Tonto Basin open up. On the way up the smoke wasn't very substantial, but on the way down clouds of smoke were pluming pretty high, and the smoke was settling in Tonto Basin before drifting east.

Didn't see anyone on the trail, and there were no cars at the trailhead when I started or finished.

2 night car camp at camp grasshopper. It was nice and quiet no crazy noise from ATV's like the rim would be this weekend.

Had to back in PHX for an afternoon commitment but had the Mazzie itch so South Fork - Gold Ridge Loop it was. Early start to beat the heat and be back by the promised noontime.

Gold Ridge Trail #47
Great trail for a predawn hike, with wide tread and steep sections, though cattle in the dark are spooky creatures. Temp at the trailhead was 87F at 3:20 AM for some awful and terrible reason. Thought I saw a burnt yucca at mile two, turned out to be a skunk with tail raised. If I would have gotten sprayed I might have smelled yuck-e (yuck yuck yuck). Sunset beat me to the top of the trail by twenty minutes, apparently needed an earlier start (heh).

Camp Grasshopper
Looked nice. Was empty. So was FR 201. Quiet at the top.

South Fork #46
This trail was gorgeous. Not even kidding. Easy to follow, easy to hike, and the scenery was jaw-dropping. Huge trees, especially in the first few miles, almost completely spared from the fires. Only needed to check the GPS twice, once at Pigeon Spring because I thought the route went right past it (it doesn't, trail stays a few dozen yards to the west) and once about two miles down when the bank gets a bit thick. I'm still a bit in awe of how pleasant this trail was. Well-cairned, wide tread, and relatively low amounts of overgrowth / deadfall for this wilderness. It does climb up along the banks frequently, almost as if it's scared to stay in the creek bed for more than a few yards, which I imagine would get annoying if you hike up it. Hiking down was a dream. I think I'm in love.

Minkis
I've been wanting to get little Nick up to the swingset since my first visit. Short hike, gradual climb & the reward at the end made it perfect. We went up the night before and stayed at Camp Grasshopper. It's gotta be the quickest way from the valley to a secluded camp spot in pines. We saw nobody the entire trip. We explored the ridgeline and Gold Ridge Trail briefly in the a.m. while waiting for Minkis. We loaded up with snacks at set out for the swingset. I'd imagine it's been a long time since a child actually played on the set. We all had a blast.

Headed back into the Mazatzal for an interesting loop. Kyle and I fought our way up South Fork a couple of years ago and were forced to turn around due to time constraints. We wanted to return and this was the day. Chumley joined us for the hike.

We started with Gold Ridge and it was a grind. The trail is in good condition as it makes a steep climb. With much effort we topped out and took a lunch break at Camp Grasshopper. This would be a great spot to car camp. From there we walked the road for a short ways and started down the South Fork trail at the trail sign.

The hike down South Fork is a mixed bag. We did fairly well at following trail tread whenever it was present. It completely disappears at times and you have to fight your way down canyon. There was a good flow of water and the upper canyon is very scenic. There were two solid waterfalls but they are heavily overgrown and the mid afternoon sun cast too many shadows for good pics. The lower half of trail had some trail maintenance & is fairly easy to follow.

I'm really glad we knocked out this loop. It's much better going down South Fork. Thanks Kyle for driving!

Have never even been to this trailhead before! :o

Gold Ridge is meh. The lower part is steep and seems to have forgotten about switchbacks. The upper part is actually pretty nice, but would have been a whole lot nicer pre-fire.

I took a short side-trip up to the Gold BM. It took a minute to find as it had been protected by a few rocks piled above it. There was some wire from a survey structure or height of light that made me look for it in the right spot. Didn't see any obvious reference marks, but didn't search too hard either.

South Fork offers nicer scenery but more challenging routefinding. I enjoy finding old trail tread, though there were times that it didn't seem logical. The leaves are just sprouting so it was still a little bit gray and bare. Plenty of water from the very top to the very bottom. Some pools plenty deep for full immerson, though not really large enough to actually swim. It got warmer on the way down and I considered taking a dip but ultimately decided to just hoof it back to the car.

It was nice to meet 9L. Thanks to Kyle for driving.

I decided to give this loop another shot with the advice from Grasshopper to do it as a one-night backpack. I was in need of a night under the stars. Started up Gold Ridge just after 1PM. It was a good little workout during the warmest part of that day with zero shade. All remnants of snow are gone and the trail is dry and in good shape. Passed a group of 4 as they were headed down. Stopped and chatted for 2 mins, that was my only break. The lower elevations of Gold Ridge are a wildflower show. Lots of colors and a great floral smell in the air. Arrived at Camp Grasshopper with plenty of afternoon left to gather firewood, set up camp & pick up trash/glass. Enjoyed a nice fire and a very comfy night of sleep as the wind died down just in time for bed. I was back on the trail at 845AM and running low on water so I was looking forward to being creekside. Took the most adventurous route possible down South Fork, staying next to the creek the entire time. I slipped and busted my pumpkin a few times. I came out of the brush and scared the hell out of a group of 4 lady day-hikers on their way up. They were hoping to complete the same loop and had a few questions. I told them to keep a lookout for my self-inflating camp pillow I lost in the brush. Still plenty of water in the creek and Wildflowers in the lower elevations of South Fork trail. Overall a very enjoyable trip with an awesome camp site. Personally, this is my kind of hike. From desert to pines to riparian zone with half of the hike on a ridgeline with scenic views and the other half in a rugged canyon with running water.
